What is DHA and Why Do We Need It | Dr. J9 Live

In this video, Dr. Janine explains what DHA is and why we need it. She shares that DHA stands for Docosahexaenoic Acid. She talks about how DHA and EPA are present in fish and fish oils, but that they are originally synthesized in microalgae. She explains that when the fish eat the phytoplankton and the microalgae the DHA and EPA accumulate in their tissues. She talks about how DHA is needed to turn sunlight in our eyes to DC electrical currents. She looks at how the highest concentration of DHA in the body is in our eyes. She explains how DHA influences serotonin receptors in the gut and has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. Lastly, Dr. Janine talks about how blue light exposure and prolonged stress can destroy DHA in the body.
