I worked this out to get me through the mental side of my first couple of marathons:

The first 10k - I can do 10k easily, its just a warm up, don't stress
10-20k - do this and it will get me to half way, then its all towards home
21k - this is actual half way
22k - really over half way now
22-30k - only 8k in this block, that's easy
30-40k - last 10k, I know I can do 10k, I've done loads of them. Each km done is now really getting close.
40-42k - I can crawl 2k if I need to, this will take care of itself.

Breaking it down really helped get my head around the distance.

Very actionable, specific advice with context (such as race times or experience level the advice applies to) added in where appropriate. Would love more videos like this one!

Thanks Phil, I'm a 17 yo XC runner planning to run my first marathon this year to qualify for Boston with my friend when im legally allowed to (minimum of 18 to qualify). We've been steadily training for weeks during outdoor season and plan to increase our long run by 1 mile every week or so, hopefully getting up to potentially 20 by june (were at 10 right now). We practice doing all of our long runs at around 6:45-6:55 per mile so that were used to the pace required to break 3 hours. We're a little ambitious but I truly believe we can break 3 hours in our first marathon, especially with these tips.

Thanks Phil. Top tips. Agree about the quality of 3 or 4 target-type runs. I find a bike day or two can effectively replace the easier “recovery” run days. I also think keeping an eye on pacing in the back half is important, especially if you have a specific target-time goal. I usually train 60-90 mins w/o fueling so I will try to train my gut as you advise. Good luck with your sub 2:40 as you approach 50. Amazing. I find sub-3 as I get to 60 challenging enough!

I just started training for the first time in my life. My goal is a 5K local marathon. I feel really timid when compared to people online who run long distances as I can hardly maintain my run for more than 500 meters and then I have to walk for another 100 meters to recover. I feel I’m a long way far behind.

Helpful, Very progressive and conservative approach. I figure that on a 5% weekly sequence it will take slightly more than 22 weeks to reach 32km though, from a 10km baseline. For these first 10 weeks one would really only add < 1km per week; more like 500-800mt. Bur from experience crucial to be conservative not to get injured and derail an entire season. Thank you!
