People in Florida have been told to prepare for the largest evacuation effort for years as a new hurricane heads for the Gulf Coast, which is still reeling from another historic storm.

Hurricane Milton, off the Mexican coast, could threaten lives when it reaches the state's west coast in the middle of the week, the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) says.

It comes just 10 days after Storm Helene - the deadliest mainland storm since Katrina in 2005 - tore through the US south-east, killing at least 225 people.

Hundreds of others are still missing.

At least 14 of those deaths were in Florida, where 51 of 67 counties are now under emergency warnings as Milton approaches.

They said it wouldn’t be bad and now it’s looking like one of the most powerful storms to ever be created. 185mph is absolutely insane.

I've visited two places in the US. Vegas and Florida. And I had the feeling that neither were places where humans should build large cities or towns and try to live

Was just vacationing in Orlando this past week - flew home yesterday. People were ransaking the grocery stores and stacking stand bags everywhere. Stay safe floridians and evacuate if you can!

This is so sad. There is extensive damage from the first hurricane. In one day, everyone’s lives can change drastically for the worse. In Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 we take the weather completely for granted. Since 1972 we have had to go through absolutely nothing. We don’t deserve this blessing from God but others do. I can pray for the ones in Florida but it won’t make a difference. No ones prayers make a difference anymore.

Stay strong Florida. Build back stronger. Strange how these hurricanes are developing in the Western Caribbean now. Usually hurricane status would be developed in the Eastern Atlantic allowing several days for people in Florida to prepare.

Speaking to my daughter who lives with her family in Jacksonville, Florida, and who just went through Hurricane Helene, she said, "You know from living here that no one evacuates. We stop by the liquor store, buy a few bottles of wine or liquor, and have a hurricane party when it arrives." However, her husband did pull their boat from the marina where it was docked, took it home, and parked it in their driveway.

And yet DeSantis claims no climate change. Yeah, right.

Climate change and rising sea levels will make properties in low lying areas and coastal areas impossible to insure. Banks will be reluctant to give a mortgage for 15 or 30 years because the property may be under water. Selling properties to average buyers will become impossible in the future as banks and mortgage companies stop making loans for these properties. Coastal areas are a high risk for insurance and extreme weather like hurricanes. People will have to self insure and take the risk of loss. Condo associations are losing their insurance and if they find a new higher cost policy they will be passing on the higher costs to association members. Flooded cars from hurricanes fill the salvage lots. Insurance companies will raise rates and pass on the costs and risks to policy holders next year. Coastal properties will be confined to wealthy individuals that can buy properties with cash and self insure for losses from hurricanes or rising sea levels.
