How to reinvent your career after 50

Baby boomers are reinventing their careers as many work past the traditional age of retirement. Reasons for working past age 65 include not being able to afford retirement and needing income or health benefits. Career coach John Tarnoff joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss his new book, "Boomer Reinvention: How to Create Your Dream Career Over 50."

I am 70.. Just got my second short story published. Did my first radio podcast interview. Working on a book. And while I am white, I'm not wealthy. I am, however enjoying a happy, late marriage to a warm, delightful man who appreciates me, as I do him. We married when I was 58, BTW.We plan to relocate to his former home city - New Orleans where I will be advocating for youth at risk. Meantime, on an almost daily basis I see people under 30 who cannot write, much less string together a coherent sentence. They do not read (well, just texts!). And they have zero interest in anything except their evening's dinner plans. To the over 50's out there - hang in..we are needed... if only to coach these whippersnappers on their dreadful spelling!!

These shows never discuss the side hustle. If you are 50 and still making the same money from 20 years ago, look into doing something on the side (cleaning homes, riding people to work, making baked goods, making candles, teaching a skill like sewing, renting out a room, etc). Many young earners need a tax preparer. An ad in the paper or Facebook will do wonders when you're consistent. It saved me lots of money and time by finding things i can do on my own.

The "hardwiring" exists across all generations. At the stages of maturity, we are interior in our focus. At the beginning of our careers, people look outward, judging and "othering", by Age in particular, etc., etc. There is no proving these truths, there is ON L Y living into them, until wisdom becomes broadly valued across the entire human cultural spectrum.

The true tragedy is even you find jobs or ways but no one recruit or accept you . How to resolve it please?

I read a stat recently that over 50% of Americans have been fired at "least once" in their career. And they are talking about '"fired" specifically, not "laid off". So its much more common then allot of people may realize.

how about underemployment? Most people will be underemployed in the future

I'm a 52 year old firefighter medic who wants to retire early, because I'm not happy with my job after 17 years. I'm finding it hard to find something that will pay the same until I can collect my pension at 55. I definately want out of the current field I'm in now. Is it possible to start a second career at this point in my life?

I have to be a stickler, but people in their 50's are not Boomers. The youngest boomers are in their mid to late 60's right now. Gen X is in their late 40's and 50's.
