Have a plan…

The problem is most people don't have a plan, which I'm going to give you today—the first seven steps of that plan.

But first, a little perspective and motivation…

If I wasn't brave enough 13 or so years ago to make a career change and then again 2 years ago to make another change, you'd never be benefiting from this video or any video I've ever created, or any training course, or anything I've ever done to help facilitate your career and your life.

I want you think about as you're hesitating to make that change. Think of all those people in this world who would benefit from you doing so.

Let's roll…

1. Make sure you want it and make a list.

It sounds silly, but there's a huge difference between a passing fancy and a burning desire. Most people fail not because of their ability, but because they don't have a good plan in place.

2. What are you willing to sacrifice?

You have the ability to make this career change or get that job. The reason a lot of people fail is not only because they don't have a plan, but also because they're unwilling to give up certain things in their life. You have to put in extra effort to compensate for the areas you’re deficient. You need to “catch up.”

3. Learn the capabilities and qualities.

You need to discover the capabilities important for success in that particular career or job.

Here’s an example. When a sales person is sells a product or service, knowing exactly how to sell that particular product is a trade skill learned through experience selling that specific product.

That's skill is usually something easily taught or learned. But, great sales people transcend product and services. They have foundational abilities like good leadership skills, good organizational skills, and good communication skills.

4. Do your reconnaissance with people currently doing that career or job.

Talk to people currently doing that job—and I want to stress the word currently.

5. Build your Franken-Mentor.

It's never been easier to get help and get educated on a career you want. I call this one “building a Franken-Mentor.”

Google them. Find their books. Find their blogs. Follow those people.

6. Anticipate and plan for the struggles.

Everybody has 3 problems. You have a:

-Learning problem
-Marketing problem
-Job-interviewing problem

7. Execute your plan to overcome the struggles and advance toward success!

The learning issue we discussed a bit. Build your Franken-Mentor, get the books, follow the blogs, do the research, do your reconnaissance, talk to the people, start getting educated, start becoming more and more familiar.

Most people are concerned about the “marketing issue.” People always want to know, "What do I put on my resume? What if I don’t have the right experience?”

I'm 32 and been working full time night shift for 16 years. Half my life. Finally taking steps to take my life back. After having a few serious health scares, it's an eye opener how little a company values human life.

1. You must want it bad. Make list
2. What are you willing to sacrifice for it?
3. You have to discover what capabilities/qualities are necessary for your particular dream.
4. Connect to people already doing your dream job/career. Get insights for changes you should be making.
5. Building a Franken-mentor. Also can be virtual, following experts and their advice.
6. Struggle and Plan for it. Envision struggle more than outcome(success), it will make your actions more realistic and calculated.
7. Market yourself. Execute your plan.

Fantastic tips. Getting out there to meet people is one of the best investments for your time. Many people have the misconception that meeting people would give them opportunities. It doesn't happen that way. You have to build trust, just like no one (most people) would marry you when you meet them the first time.

One of the best lessons I got from meeting people is learning what others do. Sometimes, you realise what others do are exactly what you could be doing and you have the exact skills for it, but just never thought about it. This is where it broadens your mind as well!

I have literally applied all of your methods from a variety of videos. I even purchased 3 of your books. I think you have great content, but it has been a year and zero luck. I am ready to just bawl my eyes out, as I have one month left of survival. I used to be an accountant and was horrible at it. I would literally fall back into a depression if I had to go back into it. Again, great content. I know you said hang in there before on prior comments, but I am just feeling stuck now.

Thank you for all of your wonderful knowledge and mentoring you display in your videos!!! I am 42 years of age with an education level of high school graduate! Ultimate goal: going back to school very soon (spring)! I am a mother of four children. Two have full-time careers (one is in her third year of teaching 2nd graders and my son is serving our country in the US Army). I still have two elementary students at home! I didn't intend to go into such depth, however you motivated me! Any advice on finding a job and going to school!??? Past employment Department Manager and Quality Control Supervisor at a call center!

Oh wow! This is great not only for its practical content, but also because the career I am planning to change to is precisely training. I would like to move from my 14 years in Talent Acquisition to training as a consultant.
