I work at Jiffy Lube, and it’s unfair to lump all of them together. It’s a franchise. Different stores are owned by different people or companies. I work in one in Texas and do our best to do a great job for our customers. We have online training everyone gets. Myself, I’ve been a mech for over 20 years (military) and got a job there because I was retired and was bored at home. The shop I work at is an honest shop. We inspect the vehicles and let the customers know if any is wrong with their cars. We ask them if they would like us to replace an item if we find it needing replacing. We show the item to the customer. If they say no, we annotate it and move on. We never pressure anyone. We do explain why the item should be replaced, but leave it up to the customers. We’ve gotten cars where they were told they needed new brakes. I checked the brakes out and saw the brakes were fine. I brought the customer out to see for themselves. We always show the customer where the problem is. I do believe I having integrity. And yes, you should learn how to do your own oil change, but some people don’t want to or can’t do it because of age. Our shop treats every car that comes in like it was their own or belonged to a family member. I get that there are dishonest people out there, but you can’t blame everyone out there of being bad. I’ve met some bad dishonest mechanics, but don’t automatically assume Scotty is the same as them. Our bulk oil is Penzoil. There’s no generic no-name oil we get. We go by the book. Torque drain plugs to proper torque as per manufacturer service manual. We put date, store number, torque, and person who did the job on the filter. We’ve had people come into them shop needing an oil change but tell us they can’t afford the oil change. We’ve given customers discounts in order to help them out. In fact, we had a customer have problems with a bank card and couldn’t get it work. The two women became very upset. I went ahead and paid their bill with my own money. I was just paying it forward. Happened to my wife once. Anyway, we’re not all douches like some people on here are making it seem. Thank you all.

Friend's friend took his car to Jiffy Lube. They stole his radio while the car was in the oil change bay. WTF? He was furious. It turns out, they can't find anyone to work there. A new guy was doing the oil change. They found the radio in his locker. How dumb can a person get.

I worked for Jiffy Lube in the late 90s, you wouldn't believe what customers came back angry over the most. Not the actual oil change, not any thing to do with any engine maintenance, they kept coming back because their car wasn't cleaned good enough.

Started doing my own oil changes last year on my car and my wifes car. The first time I got more oil on the floor than in the container. But the last one I did was 15 minutes and barely a drop spilled.
Thanks Scotty

I've been changing my own oil my entire married life, 40 years now, and will continue to do so until I die. I know what oil I use, I know what filters I use, and I am always careful with the drain plug.

Jiffy Lube treats their employees like trash. I worked for them for over a year in Indianapolis while going to college. After a year their I asked why I hadn't had any sort of raise after doing all of their training videos online and everything else they asked of me. Making minimum wage by the way. This was in 2008-2009 when gas prices shot way up. One of the district managers told me if I didn't like it I should quit. So I did without any notice. They told me I couldn't because I didn't give them a 2 week notice. I laughed and never went back. Jiffy Lube is a crap company.

Years ago I had an 04 Cavalier. I went in to get the oil changed at jiffy lube, because I really needed it done. I just moved and my stuff hadn't showed up yet.
They came up from the pit with a tube full of dark fluid. They said the trans really needed a flush, mind you I had 25k on the car. I asked them how they pulled the fluid out. They said they got it through the drain plug.
So I asked them where the drain plug was located on a 4t45e trans! To which they gave me an answer. I said that's funny, because 4t45e transmissions don't have a drain plug. Did you pull it from the dip tube? The guy said yes, I forgot. That's where we pulled it from. To which I said the 04 Cavalier doesn't have a dip tube either. Sounds like I'm getting a free oil change doesn't it? To which they said, yes sir😞.

It's not only cheaper but much quicker for me to change my own oil if you consider driving time and wait times. Plus I know it's done right

There's only one shop in Nashville I trust. I told them to do a repair I knew was not needed, and they called me up and told me I was wasting my money if I had the repair done. They didn't charge anything for the "diagnosis" either. Solid place.

My daughter had her oil changed at a quickie shop, then drove to work. Just as she parked in the lot, the check engine light came on. She phoned me and said there is oil coming out. I drove there and sure enough no oil in engine. I followed the oil trail back to the street and there was her drain plug. Turned out ok, no engine damage. Lucky the plug didn't fall out on the freeway!

A friend took his car for an oil change to a quicky lube place. Two days later his kid was driving the car and the oil light came on. He put oil in it and it drained straight out. Upon closer look, the oil filter was gone, but he found it in the cover under the car. The lube place of course denied responsibility, saying my friend was trying to scam him. Once I thought about it, I reasoned that the only thing that could have happened was they put the wrong filter on it. Luckily he saved the filter, and it was a brand only sold through lube shops, and not sold at retail. We went to the manufacturers website and searched the part number, it was for a Hyundai/ Kia. He drives a Ford Focus. I told him that he had the quicky lube dead to rights. He got a free engine replacement.

My kid nephew is a mechanic
His first job was at a shop that did oil changes for 20 bucks
He told me stories very often the owner would have them changed the oil with the same oil the took from other cars, and the cheapest oil filters when the used one they had looked old. It amazes me that people expect quality at this prices.

I stopped changing my own oil but when they started getting up to $80 or more I went back to doing it on my own.

i worked at a jiffy lube and to be honest it was a good time, we used good oil for synthetic cars we used mobil1, don’t let people tell you oil shops aren’t good, 50$-60$ for a oil changed, vacuum, air on tires, fluids refilled and window cleaning what more do y’all want, yall go to the dealer and get charged double for just the oil change, not all shops are a scam

I did an oil change today. Changing the oil in your vehicle is one of the simplest things you can do.

I’ve gotten my 2008 fusion changed religiously at Walmart.. $25 conventional lube and it’s at 212k running amazing, I’ve heard people swear against them but they’ve honestly done really good for my car. New tires and oil and she runs like a dream still

Scotty, I'm a big fan of your videos. I'm originally from east TN (Knoxville) but now live in Dallas, TX. I wish that I could find someone with at least some of your knowledge in my area. Keep up with your great work.

I have a local mechanic now. He's honest, and good enough for me. Thanks for the video Scotty. Tomorrow, a new wheel bearing is planned.
