I live in Norway. I went to my local Car Mechanic and asked for an oil change. He asked me when it was changed last, and if the filter also was changed. He then told me "come back when you've driven another 2000 miles and we will change it for you, it's still good"

I came back after 2000 miles, and he asked me if I wanted to see when he changed so that I could do it myself one day if I wanted, but he would gladly change it for me always if I wanted.

I now work there.

My papa told me before I bought my first car at 16 "If you can't do the maintenance on it, you don't need to be driving it" I have been doing all my own maintenance since and I actually find it very rewarding and gives me peace of mind that its been done correctly.

How come nobody was charged with fraud for taking money for a service that was not even done??

What really needed to be shown in this video, is "someone" being held accountable for these crimes!

I‘ve been to a place like that in Germany. They have screens and cameras everywhere so you can follow every step they do. Very good service, very trustworthy.

I’ve turned wrenches most my life . I’m 71 now and still do my own work. I’ve worked for numerous dealerships and never once been told to cheat a customer. I pride myself on good quality service and making sure a job is done right. All that being said I absolutely think prices and labor rates are out of control. The other day I was told I needed new upper and lower ball joints. With a 200.00 military discount the price was going to be 700.00 out the door. I decided to do the job myself. Parts were 53.00 for all four ball joints and about 1 hr per side. This is on the ground without a lift and my impact and hand tools. How does this job equate to 900.00 for the normal customer?!

This solidifies why I learned how to oil change myself and do the maintenance. There are tons of YouTube videos out there now that show how to do it properly you can honestly just do it yourself, if you invest on the proper tools you can get started.

Sir your gas tank smells like gas but it's supposed to smell like gasoline, in all honesty we're gonna have to change that. It'll be $199.99.

Did they remember to change their blinker fluid though?

I was at a place when they brought the air filter in to show a woman. I saw the filter was pretty clear and the "mechanic" had his back to me when he tried to sell the woman a new one and if he should go ahead and replace it. She could see me behind him vigorously shaking my head and mouthing the word NO and she declined. One of my small good deeds!

This is why I ALWAYS do my own oil changes. I tell my kids the same thing. I’m not even worried about the scams…it’s the incompetence I don’t want

At least they aren't charging for blinker fluid

Thank god I took auto mechanics in high school for two years…I’m now 55, but those simple lessons have saved me thousands in rip off repairs. I’d HIGHLY recommend that everyone take a community collage course on basic automotive repair. You don’t have to be a pro, but it teaches you the basics to protect yourself from rip offs like the ones in the video. I’ve owned dozens of cars over the years, and have called out so many mechanics trying to rip me off, I lost count! (I’ve had to call the police 3 times after confronting the garage, and they threatened me!!!) Knowledge is key in protecting yourself!

I live in a small german village. I love having a mechanic that took over his family business. He cares about his reputation and is always very clear about the costs. The guy has even done things for me and not charged... Thats quality service right there....
