This is why I had a job. Mechanics in general can't/don't want to talk to people and sell service, they just wanna fix cars.
Service writers at brand name dealerships are the salesmen and are why the mechanics get to replace that timing belt, alternator, radiator, gauge cluster, green moose, guava juice, oil pan, blower motor, large fries, chocolate shake.

my father has been a mechanic for 45 years and never pulled this shit, always owned up to his mistakes, etc. it was a surprise to me that when i moved away i learned how the majority of shops just regularly scam people. sad. it's not even a good money making strategy - you will have repeat good customers if they trust you. people come to my dad's small shop sometimes from 100km away because they heard from a friend he is trustworthy, and he has so much popularity via word of mouth he can't even help everyone. so proud of my dad

Reminds me of when I got my jeep inspected + oil changed this past month.
One of the mechanics at the dealership walked up and had mentioned "Yeah, so you do realize you have an oil leak right? The whole back side of the engine is just coated in oil. I know that that when the oil coolers crack they just burst all over the place."

My response was simply "Wait, really? I'd had that oil cooler replaced last year at this same location and I'd barely put more than 10k miles on this since then. It's probably just residual oil from when it leaked."
I don't think it was case of malicious intent (rather it being a case of a co worker giving this mechanic the incomplete short story), but it definitely helps knowing what work was done on your vehicle and when. That, and I check my fluids frequently.
