Velshi: The climate crisis is here

So far this summer, wildfire smoke has choked cities across the country week after week. Multiple heatwaves are gripping massive swaths of the nation, with no end in sight. The global temperature record broke at least three times in a row last week, and this next week may be even hotter. Models from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimate that 20% of Americans in the contiguous U.S. will experience dangerous temperatures this week. We are now experiencing some of the impacts of climate change - and it’s not going to stop until we curb emissions. So now, it’s imperative that at the local, state, and federal level, we learn how to protect ourselves.

If only someone told us this inconvenient truth years ago.

This is not “a new normal” it’s just the beginning which is going to get worse fast.

Don't forget that Gov Abott don't want workers to have water breaks.

it's sad the number of people who will jump on here and deny science for purely partisan or religions reasons.

The climate crisis has been with us since the seventies, it's only a problem because of so much inaction. Thanks to the GOP and their big oil benefactors we are where we're at.

Saw something the other day that said, as hot as this summer is, it will be one of the coolest of the rest of our lives.

Another day I'm glad I chose never to have kids. I don't have to explain why I brought them into the world.

Make Abbott stay outside for eight hours tomorrow. No shade, and no water since he "thinks" workers don't need it. If it's "not dangerous" as he claims, it won't bother him.

In those days they would have said " Wow that's dust!!!" Today they would've said " That's fake dust!!!"

Thank you Velshi. Please keep this up! More news outlets talking about our climate crisis especially coming up to 2024 will increase our chances of SURVIVAL. In my opinion the two existential challenges we face today are strengthening democracy and doing everything possible QUICKLY to minimize the climate crisis.

I remember when California & Oregon had those wildfires & people were saying it was a West Coast problem.. the smoke quickly blanketed the rest of the US & emergency room visits from the midwest to east coast skyrocketed.

Humanity is speeding toward the edge of the cliff. And some people are saying it’s all good, just rumours, and they’re stomping on the gas pedal.

The Dust Bowl lasted a decade. Then millions of trees were planted to separate fields while slowing wind erosion. Now I'm seeing those windrows being removed to gain tilable acreage. The lessons repeat until learned.

Glad the climate crisis is getting more attention. I hope it helps get the issue addressed in time. People need to understand that we have everything we need to address rhe climate crisis now we just need to act swiftly, boldly, and consistently. And on the other side is a world not only cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable but also more stable, less expensive, and more prosperous.

Hard to imagine people are still speculating on fossil fuels at NYSE while outside the air is choking.

As a fellow Canadian, Ali, I've switched from Liberal to Green; the matter is that desperate. I abandoned climate skepticism (I was never a formal denier) when the warming stall finally collapsed and now it looks like the Earth is making up for thermal lost time.

This country needs to abandon selling gas; Canada has been sowing to the wind and is now reaping the whirlwind, and many places literally. Carbon neutral 2050 isn't good enough. One US state is aiming for 2030, and even that may not be fast enough.

We deserve everything that's coming our way. The people who knew better have been warning about what would be coming since the 1980s. But people who made vast fortunes from the status quo were able to divert modest portions of their riches to sophisticated disinformation campaigns that created enough denial to keep their business model viable ling past its due date. It's time to admit that the model of capitalism that gave us comfortable lives is leading us into an uncertain and terrifying future.
