I've been thinking about all those optimistic sci-fi tropes about how humanity would unite against a common mortal enemy, but the pandemic revealed divisiveness where we thought unimaginable and the wealthy elite happily reaping the benefits while many suffered. 2020 should be a reminder that raw aspiration must also be tempered with vigilance against the darker reactionary forces.

As I am aware of a billionaire going to the edge of space, I can't help but wonder if I'll run out of toilet paper or keep food in the cabinet. Forgive me that I can't appreciate the plight of the rich man.

And we must be relentless in providing the best schools and education for all kids in the USA and around the globe. Fundamentally we create a better world through quality open unbiased education. Change at the core is a generation spanning experience.

But the problem with your assessment of the achievement, Mr Velshi, is that we keep putting the cart before the horse! Instead of seeing this as a bridge to progressive prosperity on Earth, most of us on this planet sees this as nothing but a distraction from what matters most.

Some people are so cynical that they can't appreciate certain accomplishments without tying it to their personal interest, or the immediate gratification of their needs.

You forgot the pandemic.
I think some of us are just too tired and stressed to feel the hope of distant horizons.

Tears my soul up knowing humans care for the worst things and the important things in life are dismissed. God forgive us!

We need to look at the new science relating to climate and the news is all good. UAH satellite base temperature of the global lower atmosphere (Version 6) indicates that the oceans have been cooling for a number of years. The temperatures for June 2O21 now show a decrease of 0.01 degrees. The Tokyo mean monthly temperatures from 1996 to2021 show no warming, only cooling. The CDAS Sea surface analogy difference from mean SSTA also shows ocean cooling. The US HCN stations with 104 years of data indicate that 14 out of 15 years of record high temperatures occurred before 1960. Finally, the HadCRU agrees with UAH, Ocean cooling is in progress and the Earth is in another Pause. This is all great news and great news for the planet. We should all be very happy.

Yes, amazing. Some people gained control of as much wealth as many countries have. They spent within an order of magnitude of what every country has spent to put humans in or near space. And they did mostly using tech that has been around for 50 years. Bravo.

How much more are those rockets polluting Earth?

I think we should find the origin of covid and who's responsible, before we worry about climate change or space.

I'm really enjoying the Republican Karens in the comments! So much whining!

How about figuring out how little chance there is to relocate to another planet if we ruin this one?

May not agree with all of your views, but space exploration unifies us all. Yes private or government space exploration is important. Without it we would have things like velcro which we use everyday.

Alpha centauri is the closest star and is 4.3 light years away. Voyager1 has been flying for 43 years and will reach .03 light years in 300. Its battery will die in 4. Unless musk has a hidden slipspace drive, putting humans in space is a useless novelty.

Seems like the want of the rich outweigh the lives of everything on earth...

I think we should study these dead planets since we will soon be one too....🌑🧐🙄

I don’t know... humanity refuses to grow up. Everyone needs bed time stories. People literally need a day of the week to be forgiven for all the evil crap they did six days straight.
I don’t think it’s gonna work out for us

I still can't see the point. These are not new frontiers. A human was sent into space 60 years ago. It would be great if the super rich would put all their energy in halting climate change rather than working towards their exit strategy.
