Repotting Grocery Store Orchids

Repot your grocery store orchid to keep it alive and healthy. Orchid expert Randall Bayer shows how. Orchids live on trees in tropical areas. Their roots absorb water from the almost daily rains in those areas. The tree bark where they are growing then quickly dries out. The orchids store the water in special structures called pseudo bulbs or in their leaves.

Orchids for sale in stores are usually potted in sphagnum peat moss. The peat moss holds water and does not let the orchid roots dry out between watering like they do in the wild. This means that without special attention, the roots will rot, and the plant will die in a short time. To keep the plant from dying the orchid must be repotted. Randall repots an orchid purchased in a grocery store and shows and explains all the steps.

I like to use rainwater to water all my Orchids.
Even in Winter, here in the North East I melt snow ❄️! 😂

I just received a few orchids and didn't have the slightest idea how not to let them die. After watching your video I have a better understanding of orchids and their roots system.

Thank so much for this video. I should have educated myself so…… much earlier in my young days when I would purchase orchids from grocery stores or given as gifts & I would over watered them as result literally kill them. ( because of ignorance) for Mother’s Day this year my youngest son gave me a store bought orchid. Thanks to modern media I came on your channel & now I have learned how to take care them. Thank you again.😊

Springtime here and the stores are full of orchids for sale. I've been hesitant to buy one, but not after seeing this video. Very nice job explaining orchid care!

Using just orchid bark wasn’t letting my orchid take up enough moisture, water just runs right through. A mix of orchid bark and sphagnum moss seems to be a good idea to keep some moisture around. I rescued an orchid with only one inch long root and setting it in a Tupperware with sphagnum moss and keeping it moist has grown four new roots in only a month! I’m so excited he’s not dead 😅

Thank you so much for this video. My grocery store orchid was a gift that somehow I've kept alive for over a year. I water it with 3-4 ice cubes once a week. Hopefully now I'll be able to keep it alive even longer!
