In this video, I dive deep into managing Blender assets effectively, highlighting some common pitfalls when adding assets to the asset browser. I start by demonstrating how easy it is to lose the catalogs created by the original authors or yourself when organizing your asset library—a frustrating problem that occurs particularly when you're trying to keep things neat and structured.

I guide you through setting up the asset browser in Blender, showing how to add assets from demo files and your own packs into your library. We explore how assets are categorized and stored, how to create a dedicated library folder, and the critical role of certain files like the “blender asset cats” file. You’ll learn how to maintain the original catalogs, even when moving assets around.

Throughout, I share practical solutions for preserving and merging catalogs, even when they go missing or get disorganized. I also touch on potential errors that can occur and how to troubleshoot them effectively. If you’re struggling to keep your Blender assets in order, stick around for tips that can save you a lot of time and frustration. Are you ready to get your asset library sorted out the right way?

Best examination of the Asset Browser I've watch so far. And timely too. I've been trying to organize all my project files and 3rd party downloads into an AB that makes some sense. This introduction into it has explained quite a bit, at least for me. Thanks!

I keep getting copies of assets when ever I start a new project. I have opened up ALL of the MANY copies into their original .blend files but often there are no marked assets to clear! Can you tell me how to fis this problem. Thank you .

God bless you!
After copying the asset bundles to library do the original blend files (or objects) become irrelevant? Can i delete the originals i downloaded after following the third process? @ [12:47]

Blender 4.3 doesn’t have the “copy bundle to asset library” drop down, but it seems to have done this automatically, because when I open Blender they’re all there. Is this right?

What would be amazing is if they'd simply make your Asset Browser mirror your hard drive. For have a folder on your hard drive labeled Kitbash....in that folder are 3 folders labeled those folders are sub folders called each of these last folders are relevant blender files with things marked as assets in folder has skyscraper models marked as has...sports car when you open your asset browser and point it to the Kitbash file are catalogs named Buildings/Cars/Robots....and in each of those catalogs are sub catalogs called etc.

If you want to move an asset from one folder to another do that in the explorer view and it shows up like that in the asset browser. Super simple. Works across all OS'. Why they chose to completely reinvent the wheel here with a system that has left so many people scratching their heads is beyond me. It's honestly the single most baffling decision I've ever seen with zero net benefit in doing it the way it was done as far as I can tell.

It's great folks like you are generously taking the time to explain the Asset Browser but honestly, the Blender community should be telling the devs the AB is unnecessarily complicated and to just revamp the entire thing so there is no need to be making tutorials for it. Nobody asked for a whole new way of for things in ways that make no sense with all sorts of caveats and gotchas around every corner haha!! We already have a system in place that makes sense and works. Just make it like that.

Fantastic video. I never got the "copy to asset library" button, not sure why, but I was able to fix my problem manually. Thank you! Edit: I've been adding new items from different files within the same folder and my catalogs get messed up. It only saves the latest edit I do in the new file. Any ideas on what could be happening?

I found this very useful. One question, how do I create a bundle file? Is it just a regular file with some objects marked as assets?

I hope assets snapping will be implemented in Blender 8.0 or so.

I don't know why, but all my assets are always showing 2 times. it always has been this way. I have a lot of different blender files in several folders for organization, but every files are existing only once (no duplicate of files, or even assets), so IDK where the problem comes from... very weird, still usable, but annoying.

god... that's so awful. it's mostly the user finding workarounds instead of actually organizing their library. it shouldn't be this complicated.
