What 200g of Protein Looks Like

The most chronically under-eaten macronutrient is definitely protein. And people often underestimate how much protein they eat.

The generally suggested benchmark for building muscle is one pound protein per pound of bodyweight per day.

So let’s say you weigh 200lbs, here’s what 200g of protein looks like:

2 medium-sized skinless chicken breasts 71g
2 scoops of whey protein 50g of protein
1 tin of chickpeas 17g of protein
1 pack of back bacon 35g of protein
1 Protein bar 21g of protein

That’s about +-194g of protein. I hope that gives a general idea of what a day of eating enough protein looks like.

People also often overestimate how much protein they acually need

A 200lbs person at 50% body fat and someone 200lbs at 10% body fat have entirely different protein needs.

Doctor here, a small but Vital correction if I may:

According to a recent meta analysis done in 2020, it's around 1.6-2.2 grams of protein per *KG* of LEAN MASS, not the entire Body Weight.

So an average of more or less 1.9 grams, let's say you would have a Lean Mass of 70 kg, that would be 133 grams of protein per day to maintain and build muscle with resistance training, which is far more realistic and within reach of most people, with or without supplements.

Any more than that would do no good if it did no harm, which I doubt because that much excess protein over prolonged periods of time can potentially stress your kidneys.

Hope this helps.

To be honest, the hardest part of getting the protein in daily is how expensive the actual food is, it’s not hard to eat 5 eggs a day and drink a protein shake, but buying enough to last you a week without spending over 50-70 dollars is genuinely hard here in Canada.

How can you be so confidently wrong, it's astonishing.

Few problems:
1) Daily protein intake is calculated by ones lean body mass (muscle mass) not simply by ones body weight (muscle + fat mass)
2) 0.8g/lb is more than enough for optimal muscle growth for the vast majority of people
3) Overweight and obese individuals can go as low 0.7g/lb or even 0.6g/lb of protein when calculating off of their body weight (see point 1)

It's 1 gram of protein per lb of LEAN bodyweight. If you're 200 lbs and 20% bodyfat, therefore you'd only need ~160g of protein per day.
