Drew asked to be cast as Casey bc she had other commitments and didn't have time to do Sidney, too. She is the one who suggested Neve Campbell after seeing her on "Party of Five". Wes asked her if she had any recommendations and she didn't hesitate.

Also Casey dying first was a subtle nod back to Psycho where the start of the movie kills killed early in the movie by being stabbed to death by a faceless killer.
