How do you convince people to have kids? | SBS The Feed

Cost of living, housing affordability, climate change fear -- some people feel like big outside factors are making it even harder to decide whether to have kids. So when the birth rate plummets, how do you convince people to do it?

Birth rates have been falling in Japan, the US, Australia, and many more countries. That might not necessarily be a bad thing -- it can be a good sign of people having reproductive control -- but it can be an issue when you have an aging population. And some demographers think it's dire.

There’s enough generational trauma in my family that at this point I really don’t think I’m mentally stable enough to care for a child. I want to end the cycle of abuse so no one else in my family will be forced to endure the same trauma I did growing up.

Unless the Cost of Living were to go down and wages were to finally catch up with production, many people will continue to abstain from child bearing for the simple reason that they can't possibly afford it. The current state of our economic system is unsustainable and with most people still living paycheque to paycheque, it's unreasonable to expect a lot of us to ever be able to afford our home, let alone populate it with a family.
