"We want to thank everyone for not stealing the bark" Then they'll believe they are in the majority for not doing so.

I worked sales in a Best Buy and this was part of our training. "Most people" purchase yata yata yata... and then you sell a Geek Squad protection plan, etc. 😅

I feel like for the tree example, it's more because the sign brought attention to the tree bark and made the bark seem "valuable". So now, we have not only the people who were gonna steal anyways even if the sign wasn't there, but additionally, the people who wouldn't have thought about stealing until seeing the sign mentioning the bark (that's supposedly so valuable that people steal it).

I heard about a piece of research on this topic and it confirmed what Alex says here as long as there is a perceived majority doing the thing. However if there is a perceived minority doing an action the most effect way to persuade people was to focus on the benefits of doing a thing. For example, if a person thinks that the majority of people don’t litter then the most effect way to persuade them not to litter was to say ‘most people take there rubbish with them, don’t be one of the people who ruins the environment for everyone else’ and for a person who believes that most people litter, the most effective way to persuade them was saying ‘please take your litter with you and help protect this beautiful place for everyone’. It’s a subtle distinction but an important one. You need to work out what the majority believes and tailor the message. Unfortunately I can’t remember where the research came from so please take what I’m saying with a pinch of salt.

So then, please use your logic on the stories you told.
I'd like to hear your example of what to do in the case of the stolen barks
