I searched on the internet for exactly this.
This was a well presented explanation on exactly how to partition a Hard Drive on a Laptop/ PC with Windows 10 / 11 Operating System.
Thank you for that.

At the end he says simply 'follow the instructions for the new drive letter' but it kind of left me hanging. My purpose in doing this was in trying to simply create a system image, and after formatting a 118 GB USB Drive, and trying to run the 'new system image' command, it populates the little box showing the usb, but then says, ' this usb (name) not a suitable location', which brought me here as an alternate method: attempting to create a new partition for storing the new system image. Understood all instructions up to the drive letter part: there's a choice there, and 'follow instructions' doesn't educate me in how to finish this task.
My two questions are as follows: for the purpose of creating and storing a new system image in the new partition, (if it will let me do that), should I choose the 'assign drive letter' option, or go with, 'do not assign a drive letter'... pardon my ignorance.
Question 2: I planned on researching this, but thought I'd ask you anyway, since we're here: when shrinking, how much do i, or should i shrink by, keeping in mind that the purpose of this mission is to store a new system image in the new partition. FYI:
THE MAIN PARTITION IS 47 gigs free, and i have no clue how large the new system image will be.
PS: There was this other roundabout way on YouTube that shows how to get the USB drv in position to make it compatible as a backup or system image location, but all the steps confused me, and the poster's Indian accent or dialect was too thick for me to follow along. (No offense intended) Besides this, I read that shrinking comes with its own risk, and it was suggested i back up my data before doing it. But that's redundant, as my whole purpose here is to avoid the Microsoft (and1-Note) backup system, because i want to keep it local, or off the Internet.
Sorry for the novel.
Last comment:
My last resort is to clear some data volumes off my old external drive and just put the clean image there..that should work with no issues, at least, right? Thanks all. Any viable solutions would be extremely helpful.

Hey can you do a video on how to get your Instagram account back after being hacked? I'm having so much trouble with getting it back.
