Christianity's Doctrine of 'Original Sin' EXPLAINED

The doctrine of original sin might seem like a minor difference between Mormons & Christians, but it affects much of how we understand salvation. Mormonism and Christianity have differing views on the nature of sin, and disagree whether or not mankind is basically good—meaning Latter-day Saints and Christians tend to have a different view on what salvation accomplishes.

Latter-day Saints tend to believe that men are either morally neutral or good. But Original Sin teaches that mankind is broken, evil, and hopelessly sinful. Because of this sinful nature—Christians believe that we need to be saved from ourselves and the wrath of God that comes upon our sinfulness. But Latter-day Saints tend to believe that God's salvation is moreso establishing our ability to follow the covenant path.

In this video, I explain some of these differences, explain why understanding this doctrine is important, and explain why I, as a Christian, believe in the doctrine of original sin. It's not because I'm a pessimist, but rather because it's what the Bible teaches.

"Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous" (Romans 5:18-19).

This topic also reminds me of Jeremiah 17:9 - "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?"

The Bible speaks as though we are naturally, inherently sinful. I think our experience also shows this! If we were really neutral, a higher percentage of us would abstain from sin. But, the Bible says clearly - ALL have sinned.

If 100% of us sin, doesn't that speak to a problem with all of humanity?

A natural person may do good, but for sure will sin. That's the way we are born. That is why we need Jesus, and him alone.

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Jude 3 KJV

"Also, notice that the faith I'm talking about was once, for all time, delivered to the saints. That's a very important truth. It means that by, let's say AD 100, all that God ever wanted to say, in terms of Scripture, was done. There is no more revelation. God didn't say later on, "Oh, I forgot some other stuff, " and give us other books. No, it's once, for all time." ~Skip Heitzig

As a mother I really struggle with this concept that my babies are wicked 😭 obviously it is my job to teach them to know Christ, but what does this doctrine mean for them before they have a testimony of their own?

This is a common strategy. Use a cult or false teacher to say since they teach this then it's automatically false. I am a Christian, original sin is a false doctrine. Do research, type in original sin false doctrine and keep searching on YouTube and the internet. You will see scripture does not teach original sin and guilt.

When Paul says none is righteous he’s talking about Jews and Gentiles not every person whoever lived. Read the scriptures to see the context of that statement.

This preacher doesn’t understand Paul’s teachings and just like he misinterprets them regarding the nature of grace he also misinterprets them to presume the false belief in original sin. This “Christian” would tell you that unbaptised babies who die are going to hell. Does romans 5:14 support a belief in original sin. I think not.

For my part, I know no stronger proof of the inspiration of Genesis and Moses’ account of the origin of man than the power, extent, and universality of sin. If you understand that all of mankind has come from one couple, and that this man and woman fell (as Genesis 3 tells us), then the condition of human nature everywhere is easily accounted for. If you deny it, as most do, you are at once involved in unexplainable difficulties; that is, the uniformity and universality of human corruption provide one of the most unanswerable instances of the enormous “difficulties of infidelity.” J.C. Ryle

No one proves the truth of original sin more than those who deny it.

John 3 is mostly about the need for baptism (not just grace) in order to be born again.

Hey brother thanks for the thought provoking video. I’m not LDS or anything but I definitely had some thoughts. My understanding is that what you presented is not wrong but it’s not exactly the full story of the doctrine of original sin. First of all, you can’t separate the doctrine of original sin from the doctrine of infant baptism, at least not historically. Because when Augustine of Hippo coined the term “peccatum originale” (original sin) what he was teaching was that infants are born guilty of Adam’s sin in such a way that if they die in their infancy, God will condemn them to the lake of fire if they have not received infant baptism.

Do you hold to this doctrine or any variation of it that includes infants who die in their infancy being condemned to the lake of fire?

We are all predisposed to sin and will always be because we still live in a sin sick world. However, in Christ, we are no longer under the weight of sin.

This is a false understanding of the scripture. The 1st Adam is our metaphor for mans carnal nature. Humans are not born sinners. If we choose to eat of the tree of good vs evil after the age of accountability our God nature dies within us as Adam did. Thats why we must be born again as a new creation A New Adam. It has nothing to do with a man named Jesus. The story was metaphor. We are made alive by the spirit of God not a man named Jesus. Study to show yourself approved of God. We must all crucify our 1st Adam so our New Adam can arise.

You place yourself as victims.
If it’s not your fault, you were created in gods image, then god is a sinner.
Why do you need to be forgiven when god is the original sinner.
