I always get chills when he says "THE FIRST GALACTIC EMPIRE!"

The prequel trilogy could be well called "The Three Deaths of the Republic":

- Episode I: Justice dies. The Republic fails to settle the Naboo crisis, so Queen Amidala takes the matter into her own hands while Senator Palpatine siezes the opportunity to boost his nomination as Supreme Chancellor. The Senate promptly elects him.
- Episode II: Peace dies. The Republic is split in two as a result of its rampant corruption, and despite Senator Amidala's efforts to prevent war, it inevitably happens. The Senate applauds the Chancellor when he announces the Republic is going into war.
- Episode III: Liberty dies. The Republic is reorganized into the Galactic Empire and such a move is greeted with thunderous applause by the Senate.

As a kid, I thought it was dumb for the senate to be manipulated by an obviously evil guy in robes.
As an adult, I see how much it parallels real life.
