10 Things I’m Not Buying This Year/FRUGAL MINIMALISM

Part of frugal living and minimalism for me is narrowing down what I really love or what is truly useful. These are the things that don't currently bring my life the value that I need to spend the money on. Prioritizing wants/needs really helps me save money and spend the money on the things that matter most to me instead of wasting it on the things that don't matter to be as much.

NOT THIS YEAR: No lotion, no candles, no home decor, no clothes or shoes for work, no holiday decorations, no books, no jewelry, no wrapping paper, no note cards or stationary, no fancy cooking gadgets. Saved so much already this year. 🎉

Not this year! I have stopped purchasing all the “extras” Kate mentions in this video a couple of years ago! It is amazing how much money I have saved just using what I already have!!
We also decided as a family (we are all adults, no grandchildren yet) that we aren’t buying gifts for any holidays or birthdays! However, that being said, my daughter is getting married in September! She just bought her first house two weeks ago! Last night we took her and her fiancé appliance shopping and bought them all new kitchen appliances! It was so much fun to help them and we paid cash so no worries about bills! Plus we are paying for their small micro wedding with cash! It is truly wonderful to be able to afford to spend on important moments! It’s a very exciting time in my families life right now!!! 😊😊
Have a great weekend KSquad!! ❤

Not this year! When everything was closed for Covid, I had the opportunity to go to my natural hair color which turned out way better than I expected and give up on manicures. What a time and money savings that has been!

Not this year. I have been doing a lot of decluttering this year and I'm finding out that there's really not anything that I need to buy. I have plenty of lotions, perfumes, candles, knick-knacks, blankets, and my favorite throw pillows. Living debt-free and mortgage-free and early retirement and loving it.

Not this year!! No candles, no books, no decorations, no lotion, no cleaning supplies, no zip lock bags, no storage containers. My house is full. My husband refuses to declutter. So, I am taking a two-fold approach. First, I have stopped buying a lot of things. Second when my husband starts his new job next month I will declutter when he is out of town.

About six months ago, I found out that there was an extra way to pay down toward the mortgage. I did not realize that you could increase the mortgage payment as well as put down extra money. This year is the year to buy and pay off the mortgage PTM! Hopefully by December I will have very little left on our mortgage. Thank you for the encouragement in living the frugal life!

Needed a work trouser. Somehow my brain gave me a solution by reminding me that in my second wardrobe I have tons of clothes I haven't been wearing since starting my dog walking business and that with the weight I lost doing so, I might have been able to fit again in those trousers. Well guess what: I have now a dozen trousers. So glad I never listen to those telling me to declutter. Yay me! It was a nice and unexpected 52 birthday gift to myself.

I’m no longer buying home decor items! I got rid of two empty corner shelves yesterday so I can stop thinking about buying things to put on them! Now the area looks less cluttered and I’ve saved money! Win win❤

I can relate to the plant issue. I haven’t had a real houseplant for 14 years. One of my cats is obsessed with them. He killed every plant I had when I got him. He also loves lettuce, spinach - anything green and edible. I have to make him his own little salad when I make one for the humans 😂😂. But I love him so much I don’t mind.

some of the things i discovered the past year: 1)60sec drying nail polish and short trimmed nails means it is done quickly, cheaply and lasts for a week 2) took inventory of my toiletries realised my true needs and now know when and what to get 3)i love candles so i learned to make them and bought one jar i liked and proper materials for it, i refill it every week so candles got cheaper and greener for me and lastly - i dont buy things i am too bored to dust every week for my house coz it "looks cute". having strict recycling rules in my area made me realise how much trash we produce! and only buying "real" ie gold jewellery now and wear them and enjoy it i found it will last me a lifetime, they are always "in" and i will pass it on. my no buying outside the above will be electronic) gadgets, notepads and music platform subscriptions.

Not this year - seasonal decor. It’s all in the attic to be rotated. Yep. I’ve cut down the gifts. Now I give experiences. My nieces got gift cards for pottery class with my teacher friend.

About those holiday kitchen towels Years and years ago i went to buy Christmas, bathroom hand drying towels in matching finger tip and hand towel sets which meant in season before clearance. I about choked at the cost. Further i didnt like what i was seeing aesthetically, the affordable ones didnt have much for hand drying power, and thier embellishments wouldnt last the number of years i wanted a seasional towel to last. I had already been using seasonal kitchen towels, over sized napkins, and the like in the bathroom purchased on clearance, second hand, and received as gifts. That day, i marched myself over to the seasonal kitchen towels and bought new, in season, matching towels and put them in the bathroom company coming or not. I got a pack of towels for the cost of one bathroom finger tip towel and cheaper than the cost of one hand towel.

Not buying what I don't need this year; paying extra on the mortgage is top priority. Love watching the cat naps! Cats have so much to teach us in life!

NOT THIS YEAR! We are in the process of moving to another city for my husband’s job. After 17 years in our house, I am shocked at how much STUFF— SERIOUS STUFF— that I have accumulated “just in case”. Not only are we going to be downsizing, we are moving to an area where housing is easily three times the price of where we currently live. We are empty nesters so it really is time to empty the nest. Lol. Add to that the fact I just don’t want my kids to have to go through what me and my siblings had to go through when clearing my mother’s house after she passed, I am just done with STUFF. So, as far as buying, NOT THE REST OF THIS LIFE. LOL.

I keep a running list on Amazon of things I would like to have. This helps my daughter and husband figure out the perfect gift for me. I actually get what I want!

NOT THIS YEAR! I don't buy any of these things already :D I'd add to #1, invest in resusable products like cloth napkins to save money on disposable paper products. I haven't bought paper napkins or paper plates/cups for almost a decade. We are working on phasing out paper towels and tissues now. Welcome back Kate, I hope you had a lovely relaxing time off.

I am always amazed at how many people say they have to go and buy holiday clothes for when they go away. I decided years ago this was a big no. Freinds will say but I have worn everything ! I just remind them that no one on holiday will have seen anything they wear so it doesn't matter if they re-wear items.
