Knee Clicking and Locking⁉️ It Could Be Your Meniscus #shorts

Ever heard of a bucket handle meniscus tear? It's not your average knee injury! 🦵 Picture this: your meniscus (that crucial cushion in your knee) gets a tear so severe that a portion of it flips over like the handle of a bucket. These tears are no joke - they account for up to 10% of all meniscal injuries and often occur in young, active individuals. They can happen during sports, especially those involving sudden twists or turns. Think basketball, football, or soccer.
.
So, what are the signs? 🚩
- Knee pain (obviously!)
- Swelling
- Limited range of motion
- That dreaded "locked knee" feeling
Here's the kicker: bucket handle tears often need surgical intervention. Why? Because that flipped-over portion can get stuck in the joint, causing mechanical issues. It's like having a doorstop in your knee! Modern arthroscopic techniques have made repair more successful than ever. Surgeons can often stitch the tear back in place, preserving your meniscus and potentially reducing the risk of future knee problems.
.
Recovery takes time and patience, though. You're looking at about 4-6 weeks on crutches and several months of rehab. But trust us, it's worth it to get back to your active lifestyle!
.
Remember, early diagnosis and treatment can make a world of difference. If you're experiencing persistent knee pain or mechanical symptoms, don't wait - get it checked out!
.
Have you or someone you know dealt with a bucket handle tear? Share your experience in the comments! Let's raise awareness about this tricky injury and help others recognize the signs early.

Went to an orthopedic surgon because I couldn't take the knee pain anymore. Arthritis in both knees. When examining my previously injured knee ... He said. "You're aware you have nothing in this knee ... Right?" I was well aware. I often have to painfuly "Pop" it to walk.

So I am 16 and have hypermobility syndrome/ factor 7 blood clotting disorder(hemophilia, it’s mild and it can’t be a bleed in the joint) and 4 months ago, my knee subluxated 7 times while kneeling down 1 time when in middle splits. 1 time when standing and twisting. 1 time when doing front splits. 4 times when doing a chest stand roll(it’s a flexibility thing). It hurts on the anterior side, and sometimes on the lateral side, pops and clicks when I walk( when I set my foot on the floor when walking). Hurts when walking and running and when doing frog stroke in swimming and when doing back stroke. It also hurts when walking up stairs. One time I was on a flight and and after 13 hours my knee was swollen and painful. It hurts in the pancake stretch a lot. I had an mri but it was normal and so was the Xray so my surgeon(orthopedic) said it’s growth spurts. He referred me to physical therapy in January and the pain got worse. It only started clicking when walking when I started physical therapy. It’s been much worse then when I started.

Hi doctor, are there different types of tear? Type 1, 2, 3 . Can some heal on their own ?

I’m 20 and a year ago I had to have more than 70% of my lateral meniscus removed, it’s really scary to think about what this is going to look like in the long term but it was just irreversible damage to it that it would be doing me more harm than good if I left it there

I have a really bad one that has me on and off crutches every now and then. All it takes is bending it too far. I've just kind of stopped using it lately.

When I lie down on my back and bend my left leg to 95 degrees, I experience pain in my knee and struggle to lift it, could it be a torn meniscus?

In my early 20s my knee would lock up. If I crouched my left knee wouldn’t straighten out. I would have to pull my leg back and stretch it. If that wouldn’t work I would sit down and straighten it & it would make a loud pop noise. Didn’t hurt but wasn’t comfortable. I don’t know what resolved the issue but it hasn’t happened in a few years.

My knee snaps everytime I bend it. I could crack it repeatedly but it doesn’t ever hurt. It’s weird.
