Understanding Knee Buckling

Knee buckling can happen in different ways. In this video, I discuss...
👉Inward (valgus) buckling of the knee which is common with MCL and ACL injuries.
👉Forward/backward buckling of the knee indicative of a quad injury (tear), Patello-femoral dysfunction, effusion, knee pain, patella tendon disorders and anything that cause reflex inhibition of the knee.

thanks for this video. my knee has been doing this thing for a while and i didn’t know how to describe it? i came here to see if “buckling” is the word for my knee and it looks like i am having this issue, now i saw your physical example of what “buckling” means.

My 92 year old father likes understanding the "why" of things. Thanks!

Both my knees have completely failed twice, buckling forward and dropping me on them with no pain, one time while working in a -40 cold storage (I was sweating and had warm clothing on) and once while hiking with shorts on at higher altitude. There was no warning and I had to have help walking afterwards to a location where I could sit until they started working again.
Now they’re getting really sensitive to weather changes and ache when it does.

Im going through your videos hoping I find something that can help lead me in the right direction. I’m 29 and already have tons of muscle, nerve and pain issues. I’ve been absolutely miserable for the past year especially.

My knees buckle often, what I call “bambi legs”. If I don’t stand a certain way my knees will do multiple little buckles while I’m standing still. Parts of my legs feel numbish, my fingers and toes will feel numbish like when you’re outside in the cold for too long. Shooting, stabbing, tingling, trickling sensations from my head to my toes. EXTREME headaches and pressure that last 2 weeks are longer with no relief from OTC meds 😣

Thank you for this! Very informative and made me less anxious about my injury while waiting for MRI. I'm experiencing the forward buckling on my right knee and it's most likely swelling/weakness post trauma as you mentioned. It freaks me out as I recall my knee was buckling right and left when I tore my ACL 11 years ago.

I searched "wobbly knee" and learned it is "buckling". I need to find more of your videos on how to treat it. I used to enjoy playing soccer and keeping myself healthy and fit, now the last close to 6 weeks and tried again and my knee "giving out on me". Fell down with sharp pain. got up after a couple of minutes with literally almost no pain 🙄. what is going on. I am trying to get my life back.. this is a double hit in my family. my 16 yr old is in crutches due to fibula fracture playing soccer. we are in deep sorrow. God has some mercy on us.

What if my knee jerks back then forward, gets wiggly, then just caves in? No pain or swelling or injury.

For a couple years now, my left knee has been experiencing occasional, immediate weakness when climbing stairs, and I need to be holding the handrail to keep from collapsing. The pain seems to be coming from the back of the knee. Any idea what could be causing this? (I have had issues with lower back pain, but that has been relieved in recent years)

It's a great video.
I've a couple of questions.
Can PCL buckling heal its own?
Or can PRP fix this?
And please make a video on Buckling vs Tear Ligaments.
Much appreciated.
Thanks

Years ago my wife had an injury to her right knee from dancing! It went forward and she heard a loud crack which was even louder than the music back in 2002!
Today she looked at her knee and part of the top part has collapsed! Half of the top but is missing whereas it used to have two large holes! Any idea?🤔

This sounds exactly what I've got. It's like when I turn my left foot as far to the left and then rotate my leg in that direction (to rotate left) my left knee buckles on the inside (Right side of left knee) as if it's about to pop out of the joint. And immediately after that happens, I can sometimes walk on it normally, as if nothing has happened but my leg becomes extremely weak, as if it had no strength to hold me up anymore. Now that I'm older (been dealing with this for like 10 years now)... my leg sometimes feels like it wants to bend in the opposite direction of where it's supposed to bend when standing up straight.

Can sometimes walk normally without pain or instability if I get into a good stride, but starting and stopping can feel very dangerous. Been using an ace bandage to get around at work, but I've lived the last 10+ years with the fear that I might one day break my knee/leg because of this issue.

It's caused me to fall down stairs, or even miss a curb and fall into the street (when it feels like it's going to pop out of place), just to name a few times.

Hoping someday to visit a doctor to solve the issue. But I guess my question is; what exactly based on the above could be the issue? I know there is some inflammation, and no physical (bone) damage to the leg as I went to the hospital at least once where they did an X-Ray after a particular bad incident and found no damage to the knee in the X-Rays. They gave me a long-leg brace, and after 2-3 weeks I was able to barely walk again (As after that incident I couldn't even put weight at all on that leg, as if it were broken/sprained).

Or rather, what else can I do to strengthen the knee or better stabilize it? I've broken my ankle before, and physical therapy helped with that. But not sure what physical therapy I could do for a knee?

1. wow this video is fresh(new) thank you so much !! just subscribed
2. my left knee (surgical) buckles inward but there is no pain what's so ever. it has never happen when I walk though. only when i lay down i extend my leg and from my knee and below it lightly shifts to the left.

Great🤦 I injured my knee July 5th. It still buckles inwards after 6 weeks of PT. My Ortho appointment is this month though 😬

@orthoevalpal Thank you for this video. There are sooo many videos out there for knee pain, but they don’t address the buckling Mine buckles inward/outward with excruciating pain, so much that I can’t walk on it for 3 to 4 days. It’s becoming more frequent now occurring once a week or so just walking. What is my next step to address how to fix it?

I had a torn acl and had a repair. Directly after the sports accident my "only" issue was subluxation/inward buckling with every step of normal walking. Due to this instability I did not walk at all for the 3 weeks waiting for the OP and just started full weightbearing 2 month after OP again (= in total almost 3 month not fully weightbearing). I never had this subluxation/inward buckling anymore, knee feels stable in general, just sometimes it buckles backwards/forwards, which I did not have at all right after the acl tear, where all my muscles were still strong. This is why I attribute this to muscle weakness and/or slight swelling related.
Do you see this backwards/forwards buckling in post OP knee patients with weak muscles and it resolves after they build up their normal muscle strength? Or is it very strange and uncommon to have after a knee surgery?

You explained types and reasons of buckling very well but what is the reason of a type of buckling where knee first go backwards and then forward?

Thank you doctor
I was in pt today (post acl surgery) doing some stretches and my knee gave out. It didn’t hurt but it was a very uncomfortable feeling. I’m worried I hurt my new acl or meniscus.

Does this have some kind of underlying condition? I dislocated my right knee around 3 years back and had surgery on it to fix some problems. Then a little over a year after that it happened to my OTHER knee, except I didn’t dislocate it, it just gave out after buckling like that. Now I have issues with my left knee buckling inwards and it makes it super difficult because I’m involved in theater which requires a lot of dance, and I can’t run either or my knees will buckle. It doesn’t necessarily hurt, but it’s super uncomfortable and if it DOES give out it feels incredibly weak to walk on for a little while afterwards.
