It's a tricky situation where they definitely want to defeat kaido, stop his tyranny and open wano but at the same time kaido is the reason why the island is flying, so his defeat will mark the fall of onigashima and the deaths of allies and enemies alike, which would be devastating.
Kaido is way more cunning than he seems, he muscles for sure, but he also has a brain, also the island is filled with weapons and explosives which means that an impact with the ground would make everything go BOOM, and we don't want that.

It was a clever way to beat Kaido IMO, not only is he on a battle marathon but also heavy lifting the whole island AND moving it through the air kilometers away to the capital.

This way even if he is beaten in the end, his reputation as "The strongest" still stands and the saying "If it's 1v1 Kaido wins" also stays true so it's not seem as too much of a plot armor when they defeat him :v

Kaido is really the king of beasts, his strength is terrifying. I do not see any of the Yonko surpassing him in strength except for Whitebeard in the glory of his youth and strength. This terrifying club brought down many of the strong who do not fear death
