That clash between Moria and Kaido resulted in Moria losing his entire crew and his descent into a maddening depression which turned him into a giant shadowy eggplant.

This isn't foreshadowing, he straight away tells us.

This is why i love kaido as a character. The way oda has built up hype for him for hundreds of episodes to one day actually see the character who in the sense of fighting he loves it very much like whitebeard and roger. This is just another reason why i love oda

It was mentioned beforehand.
It is also the Reason Moria is using Zombies as his Pawns.
He lost all of his Friends and Allies to Kaido, but was left alive to live with the reality that they are all gone because of him being reckless.
Oda mentioned one time during the Thriller Bark Arc, that Moria was pretty much like Luffy at that time.
It makes sense, if you take into account, that he was facing Teach and his Crew at their Base, to avenge Absalom.
He joined them, yes, but Aokiji did too and neither one of the Blackbeard Pirates is truly a Person someone can trust.
This will be their downfall, mark my Words.

moria let himself go when kaido was out making gains in the gym.

It amazes me that even after Moria gave up fighting directly and got weaker he still gave Luffy enough trouble to combine Gears 2 and 3.

Moria wouldve been a yonko. He was kaidou level at that time maybe a bit lower. But his progress stopped after all his friends died and was traumatized by kaido. He then settled as a shichibukai and lived a comfy life, using dead people as comrades since he didnt want to go through the same pain of losing his friends like before. What a sad story.

Emphasizes a long standing belief of mine: Keeping up with being strong doesn’t make you impervious. I imagine with the insane number of shenanigans that Moria comes up with (including his FREAKING IMMORTAL ARMY) he could put Kaido in a situation where his shadow could be taken. Kaido is strong enough to probably rip Moria’s head off but that isn’t the same as actually having a guaranteed win, and Oda understands that.

Luffy in one episode: "Man, I'm hungry."
Luffy in the following episode: *eating*
Fanbase: "Oda does it again. What insane foreshadowing!"

Reminders that this Kaido's power is closer to the Kaido that Oden almost beat based on the timeline.

Meaning that young Moria is relative in power to younger Kaido and Oden at one point.

Moria and kaido look happy when they were fighting

That was Moria in his prime. Kaido kept growing while Moria only got weaker from that point

Kinda sad we never got to see Moria's prime... Would have loved to know about the Gecko Pirates and how Moria used his devil fruit

Imagine the universe where Moria won this fight and went on to become one of the Four Emperors himself

Oda: this thing happened
Oda: "shows thing"
Some random youtuber: OMG GODA, FORESHADOWING

I know Moria is probably dead at this point but I really hope that if he does survive that he gets his motivation back. If he was once clashing with Kaidou I really want to see what he could do now after having his devil fruit for so long and stops wasting a powerful devil fruits potential.

I’m guessing Luffy was able to beat Moria because he effectively retired from fighting for years and his will was broken so he lost his haki

Honestly Moria wasn’t as weak as we all remember. If he kept up his physcial ability and haki along with his devil fruit, he’d be up there with the former warlords. If he got stronger and was able to take shadows and bodies of stronger pirates like a mihawk shadow ryuma, it’d be gg

It's sad how moria lost all his pride as a pirate after losing to kaido he could've been a good villain instead of annoying slob.
Man looks so good on his pirate days
And sieng kaido smile which is rare means he musv'e seen him as a worthy opponent to fight.
