Animal protein reduces death risk

A new study in elderly Italians reports an association between eating more animal protein and a lower risk of dying. This is counter to the common belief of animal protein and the risk of cancer, heart disease and death. Why the difference? We highlight many of the reasons in this video, but the biggest reason is likely because animal protein by itself has no significant detrimental health effect. Here are more details.

I’m carnivore. Easily hit my goal weight loss with no loss of muscle mass. First time in a decade that my BP is normal (was on bp medication). No more aches and pains. Feet no longer ache in the morning when I get out of bed. Regardless, I get no support from family/friends. Just consternation. I’m this weird outlier that they constantly prod me to stop eating this way. Good times

Primary real food: animal protein, animal fat.
Subsistence food: starches, sugars, plant protein.
Poison: fructose, so called vegetable oils.
Compare my assessment above to current dietery recommendations that likely will be forced on us soon.

I’ve been keto predominantly for 7-8 years and carnivore for around eight months and I have never felt better. I mostly do OMAD, don’t eat a lot of dairy including cheese and count/measure/weigh nothing. I am a 64 year old woman and my ambition is to die healthy at a very old age. Thank you, DietDoctor.

It is logical that our bodies would recognize meat better than plants.

(Harry here) Well, I'm kind of a believer in Animal Protein for just this reason. I did Veganism for 6 years then had a heart attack so we switched over to Keto / PSMF / Carnivore and my arteries cleared out and the damaged part of my heart healed itself which caused the doctors to scratch their heads and tell me basically nothing. I tried to get them to understand the diet change but they would not listen or even look into the possibilities that Diet affects results. SO I FIRED THEM and moved on. I was hoping that they would at least look into the Keto / Carnivore Diets, lifestyle but NO. Great Video thanks.

I was plant based for almost 5 years. I developed health issues in the 3 year and stuck with plants only for two more years while my overall wellness declined. About 4 months ago I switched to an animal based diet…all my issues are gone or have greatly improved. I ate a mostly whole food plant based diet with occasional processed products for treats. My diet was heavy in plant based protein, fiber and of course carbs. Within two weeks of cutting almost all plants and grains from diet I felt great.

Former vegetarian here for 8 years to cure my chronic high blood pressure and high blood sugar. It was only when I started eating more fish, beef, and eggs and became keto I saw improvements on my lab results and overall well-being

Let's not forget that animal protein is not exclusive to the 4-legged variety.

Once again you have added a sane, level headed, voice to the discussion. Thank you. As a carnivore (2 yrs/after 6 yrs AIP Keto) I know that an animal based diet is working beautifully for me. So happy to see that smarter science is catching up with the experience of thousands of us. Looking forward to the science continuing to build its case for eating this way. Thanks again.

If you want to find a result that contradicts a study found in epidemiology, just wait a little while and you will find it in epidemiology. There are so many variables that one can't account for in epidemiology that it is rarely a good idea to infer cause from epidemiology alone, unless the absolute, NOT relative, probability increase is huge. That is why it is prudent to only use epidemiology as a spring board to frame hypotheses which should be tested in more controlled settings.

Our death risk is 100% ! The questions are how and when we will eventually pass 😜

I don't see how meat protein is going to hurt us, we're made of the stuff.

Plant-based protein also has high lectin and oxalates contents

The historical record is the only study I need to see. People used to die mostly from infection, dysentery, injury and very very little of the diseases that we all die of today. The majority of the earths population survived on meat before the advent of agriculture. Paleontology shows the health bone and dental was better for mankind before the advent of agriculture. At least that is where my studies have taken me. We shall see. Ketovore here and getting healthier everyday.

‘Low quality data’ …. says it all. Animal protein as efficient, can also mean increases cancer growth. See T. Colin Campbell.

Dr Scher, I realize that eating a lot of protein with a lot of bad carbs and fat isn't healthy. But I do think that just adding protein to a diet that contains a lot of unhealthy sugar or carbs can be helpful, because adding this protein can help a dieter transition to a low carb diet. Protein is very satiating. Therefore, if you feel full, you can more easily resist the cupcakes, bread, sugar etc. I do think that if you can't start a low carb diet because you just have to have that cheese cake, it is better to at least start eating more steaks or other protein foods.

can you make a video talking about HCAs and PAHs in meat when cooked at high temperatures? and the increased risk of certain cancers from it?

Hello, Dr. Scher. I was recently diagnosed with CKD. My doctor wants me to go on a Renal Diet. Should I avoid Meat Protein altogether and just stick to Plant Protein? Since protein consumption is all about Net Amino Acid Utilization, and plant protein has approximately 1/2 the Net Amino Acid Utilization when compared to meat protein.
