Godot 4 is in a great state for learning. The parts that work basically the same as in 3.x (sprites, collision shapes, particle emitters, shaders, nearly all the Control nodes) were never unstable, though a lot of things were tweaked and renamed for consistency. It's just a lot of the new stuff that's not totally 100% stable yet.

didn't ask
*switches to 4.0 anyway and refuses to elaborate further*

Yeah it's likely not production ready. But if you're just experimenting, and not really making a game commercially I think it's fine to use Godot 4

Nice points! I remember when Godot 3 was released, it crashed a lot, did not work on a lot of machines and all. I dropped the engine at the time, and at the point of Godot 3.2 most of those issues were fixed, and the current 3.5 is amazingly stable (I also share your feelings of it being left quite abandoned).
When working as a team on serious projects we cannot allow us to fight bugs, crashes and experimental features that may be removed in future versions, so we'll keep in Godot 3 for the time being. At the same time, I'm so excited for new projects that people will develop in Godot 4: not only they will be the real battle testing for the engine to get stable and evolve even more, but we'll see the real potential of the new major update (as well as being a showcase for newcomers). Can't wait .🤗

I too will not be switching to Godot 4 as of now. Maybe I will in the future. But for now, Godot 3.5 does everything I need it to do.

3.5 also has some hacky stuff put in that was only fixed in version 4. The keyboard shortcuts are hard coded to a single layout, for example.

I just have ported my Godot 3 project to Godot 4. Soon I have imported it has broken. It took me 2 hours to get the things working in v4. I changed a dozen of scripts, the models have problems in texture linking, input management, the collider attribute became a method... But the things come back to work. The new rendering system messed the look and feel of the simple 3D art of it, but I don't want to go back to v3. I think the version upgrading depends if there are advantages. The v3 is still valuable.

Hello friend, I want to make a game similar to yours. To mobile devices. If you don't mind?
P.s When you pick up an object, it lights up. How did you activate Grow in the code?

I tried converting my project from 3.5- to 4.0 in 2 days. Everything works smoothly except the physics system. Since above 4.0 they don't support bullet physics engine anymore. So I decided to stay in godot 3 until the physics system is complete.

I want to get into game dev once I finish my school semester. Was thinking about starting with Godot 4 but would Godot 3 be a better choice to start with in the meantime?

Switched 4, and it's pain as I used Kinematicbody3d for player and enemies, and now I have to work through so much shit from scratch since virtually none of 3.5 code is compatible with the 4.0

It take time for dev to work on version which is not easy. It should be like another game engine. No one is perfect as should other dev working or users working on build their own or plugin to work with godot.
