***Instead of repairing the server that keeps freezing up, the company has one tech come in super early every day to restart that server. Then, management thinks that employee lives at the office..lol

Barely relevent, but when I was in school, the fire drill was "get out, leave your belongings behind." One day, the kitchen caught fire. just as we were leaving for the morning break, so we all had our bags. One of the teachers came running up screaming and tried to send us into a door with smoke coming out to "put our belongings in the classroom" because of the belongings stay behind rule. Headmaster was extremely angry. Livid doesnt come close. Incensed might... Ah! Apoplectic. There it is.

Benelux: Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg. So it is pronounced like it is written like the first syllable of each word.

Windows works, usually, which is really all you can ask for an OS. I played around with a couple flavors of Linux and between the poor support from most software and the headache of getting it actually working it just wasn't worth it at home. And Macs are only useful as boat anchors and doorstops.

OTHER Microsoft products, their insistence on pushing updates, the growing trend towards subscriber models, the bloat they have integrated into Windows to make their other products work better, THAT can all die in a fire.

"Save your work because the server is on fire." Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think a data stream will put out a fire.

Your well-deserved hatred of IE reminded me of when we first started using IIS back in the nineties. It arrived, configured by default to be optimized to work with IE, and that meant it worked correctly with NO OTHER BROWSER. We had to turn off some cache setting so that NetScape (90's, remember?) could view the pages. We also had to modify our e-mail system to be able to work with LookOut Express, because it couldn't handle continuation lines in the SMTP welcome message (Yup, Micro$oft didn't read the standards, they just kind of guessed and ended up missing this).

I can understand the awkwardness of divided families. When my parents divorced, mom didn’t do much dating but dad got snatched up by the gal he’d been seeing (cause of the divorce) like the last pixie stick at scout camp. When My 19 year old brother was at dads place the first time she gave him a big ol hug and said “You can call me mom.” He stepped out of her reach and replied, “No I can’t.” Let me tell you it really put a damper on the visit.

I do love your personal stories when it deals with the subject your reading. Makes it feel more personal and enjoyable. I'm just glad the Jackalope hasn't charged you yet and the twitchy cat has a comfortable life.

People getting offended by hairy shoulders. A new low.

The hairy shoulder comment reminded me of an old Robin Williams stand up skit where he was talking about being a lot hairier than the average man. He joked that when he went to the zoo the gorillas would gather and point at him.

Server on fire... ouch! now that is a very nasty thing... and someone likely had a long chat/training on how to act when they have an emergency!

Permanent workaround instead of actual repair. That is definitely a government fix.

I’m right there with you; I’m not on the level of IT but I enjoy technology. I also have a degree in medical technology, but that is mostly medical/chemistry knowledge, combined w/ daily & weekly maintenance tasks, & just problem solving when it needs a quick repair. Mostly just “this little piece has somehow gotten jammed; unwedge it, maybe lubricate that part of the analyzer. Then watch it run for 1-2 minutes to make sure it’s really fixed.

Backlogged tickets... Oh I know that... some Mondays are like what he describes, as I have areas that are 24h and some that are 6 and 7 days... so have 63 hours since my last shift... and can take a while to catch up.

Funny that he mentioned IE. At my current job we still use Internet Explorer 11 for our primary secure web database. It's simply unbelievable how long they are trying to hold onto it, just to save money. They know it's going to cost them to make it compatible with Edge or Chrome and just don't want to do it. Can't wait until it comes back to haunt them.
