Cosmic events story: Absolutely beautiful OP. Too bad Sue's company wasn't looking for an IT person to be in-house.

Elevator phone story: Given all the problems with the ISP, why not just change providers?

Non-techy boss story: So how long did you stay with this dinosaur?

The funny thing about the first story is, it is indeed a very rare, but real occurrence... so technically he isn't even lying.😂 It's called a Single-Upset Event (SEU) or Soft Error.

I assume story 2 takes place in the USA. There are lots of illegal monopolies, especially when it comes to ISPs, so people literally have no choice.

Story 2: This could be where the company mentioned is the only one... or maybe the only one that actually provides fast internet in OP's area that worked with businesses.
Story 3: Wait... Boss had a non-updated company phone??? Seriously... talk about a HUGE security risk. WOW!

Thanks to all 3 OPs and KCC for this one.

Over the years, I too developed a hatred for 3 letter, one symbol provider as well. Now I happily have nothing to do with them. I have, over the years, switched absolutely everything away from their incompetent company.

Last story - and incompetent boss has now probably failed his way into the CEO position...

13:31 the reason why they wouldn’t go with a different ISP is because in the USA Internet service providers are effectively regional monopoly’s there are only 3 or 4 providers and they’ve divvy up what areas they work in by region. So your typical options are shitty ISP A that offers decent speeds or shitty ISP B that runs a DSL line with a maximum of 3 Mb download and 1 upload. Some areas are starting to see more competition, but for the most part, that’s what your options are. Assuming you’re lucky enough to have Broadband in your area.

As someone who was doing telephony support for a few years, the reason why you can't go with other telephone providers is because you need to do things as a POTS line. Stands for Plain Old Telephone Service. Uses copper wire system to connect. If there is a power outage, those lines still work. Most other ISPs require a modem to make a POTS system active and they transmit the signal over the Internet.

On the isp issue, some places, especially in the U. S. some providers have a geographical monopoly on certain areas. I can count on one hand how many providers have ever serviced my area. Choices are pretty much dsl or satellite, which the former isn't always in range, and the latter is prohibitively expensive.

Why keep going on with it? Well because telecom companies intentionally don't overlap service areas so they don't have to compete with each other. Especially with high volume commercial areas. That way they could charge whatever they want and you can't do anything about it. If you want to have a business. That's why. And since AT&t owns the lines, you're forced to deal with them even if you go with a different carrier.

My IT super power is the ability to make people like BOSS in story 2 understand. I have literally spent 20 minutes making a person understand what needs to be done and 30 seconds doing it. As long as I am getting paid for my time, I don't mind ;)

Technically Idiot Boss Story: Unless boss is the Owner, he needs to be IMMEDIATELY Transferred someplace his incompetency can't hurt the Company...

The Unemployment Line sounds about right to me...

These stories are the exact reason why I will NOT work for someone other than myself...ffs

Why go with the one provider:
Unless you live in a Metro area, most providers have a monopoly on internet service. (If I don't go through my local Cable Internet provider, I have no internet...)

Besides, you live in Canada and are actually asking that question? (You think that shifting from Shaw to Bell would actually make any difference?)

Story 1 "fed a line"
Nuetrinos are real
0's and 1's being randomly flipped is real. Nuetrinos causing damage to nuclei they may randomly come into contact with is real (it's how they're detected)
The hypothesis is 100% possible if exceedingly implausible.
No dude, the manager stuck their nose into someone elses conversation and needed it chopped.

You should know that even if the details differ, back in the 1960s a certain 3 letter computer company without a special symbol discovered that cosmic rays do affect computer chips, flipping the ones and zeros. It's been around a very long time.

I personally worked at an installation where a program was run and it was wrong. It was run again and got the right answer and continued to get the right answer each time after that. These things do happen.

It should also be noted that since that time, technology has taken notice and been adjusted accordingly so that when cosmic rays affect computer chips, it is auto corrected on the fly without disrupting the operation.
