Personally I think one of the main reasons why MMOs are dying or fading away because if you think about it a large majority of them pretty much just took what runescape or WOW has done and put thier own spin on it, of course that's not a bad thing but for today's gamers especially people who aren't that big into the mmorpg scenes would dive right on in and then within a week they just quit playing because these games are easy to start at first but at the same time making any form of progress takes a long time to do not to mention in certain games require you to be in a guild despite it being an optional thing because certain dungeons or events in some mmorpgs require a party of 3 or 4 people but what if I don't want to do that then?

Welp then I'm going to miss out on getting better rewards than what I usually would get if I'm with a group, and another thing I also have a problem with is just the overall grind in these games too, whether that be for a certain item you might want or to lvl up that specific skill whatever the reason is it sucks, because I don't want to waste like 2 to 3 days worth of time grinding away to get a specific peice or gear or weapons or lvl, and for some of us we don't have alot of time to spare anymore like we used to when we we're kids, so thats 2 to 3 days could take up longer than a week and for some even longer than that.

But yeah pretty much make playing your own way more flexible and don't punish the player if they choose by not wanting to sociallize with others, and get rid of the 4 to 8 hour long grind fests and make shit more easier to obtain, like yes its been the norm since mmos first started to become a thing but obviously something isn't working if players aren't sticking around for the long term.

It’s a bit of both probably. TikTok era makes mobile games more preferable since most don’t have the time to put in to an actual mmo. And devs seem to want to find the next big thing, either in graphics or mechanics. Going back to basics is probably what’s needed to find the grassroots

Which MMOs are shutting down? I stopped playing a while ago after maybe two decades of playing various ones. And the big take away has always been that at some point it becomes a chore and not something you enjoy. Things that require you to log in every day like daily quests or limited events are what killed it for me really. Its like you don't HAVE to do it but then FOMO hits you hard. And when you realize that it feels more like an addiction than hobby its time to quit.
