We'll explore the reasons why every other MMO is struggling, and we'll focus on one particular MMO that's thriving in a difficult market. We'll answer the question, why is this MMO the only one that's still growing after existing in the market for a decade, and reveal the secrets to its long-term success.

Every MMORPG has seen its population decline over the last 10 years except for two. In this video we will discuss what Old School RuneScape does different than the rest of the MMORPGs, like World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Black Desert Online and RuneScape3.

In this video I also interview Jagex Developer, Mod Sweeny and ask for his thoughts on what Old School RuneScape is doing right. Why is OSRS more popular than RuneScape? Why Is OSRS defying industry wide downward trends? Lets find out why OSRS is one of the Most Played MMOs out right now

as the old addage goes, no one really quits runescape, just take long breaks. The best part about OSRS is that no matter where you stop, you never get left behind in the game. Geilinor will be there when you go back, just they way you left it :D

As a RuneScape Player of about 15 years, and plays regularly still to this day. This video does the game so much justice, Great work Mr Lucky Ghost!

I think this voting system creates an interesting dynamic where developers have to convince players that a change is good. That could be a reason why old runscape is successful.

My reasons why OSRS is the #1 MMORPG:
1. Account progress - Everything you do in the game will progress your account. In other games, you could spend 40 hours a week leveling up and upgrading your gear, then in a few months time a new season or expansion is released and all your hard work is for naught.
2. Simplistic AND technical game play - There is content that requires a lot of awareness, skill, effort, knowledge, etc. and there is content that you can afk and watch a TV series or study.
3. Gear and rewards - While a lot of other MMORPGs are leaning toward transmogrification systems, OSRS has held true to wearing your earned piece like a badge of honour. Every player knows who is and who isn't a boss.
4. Community - Obviously all online communities have a percentile of toxic players, but in my experience no other gaming community is more generous and helpful.
5. Content creators - The best content creators... it's not even close.
6. Updates and polling - As OSRS evolves from it's 2007 model, the community are able to vote on and welcome these new changes.
7. The Wilderness - Nothing is more thrilling than traversing the wild for PK or PvM challenges, risking most or all of your items on you. I wish more games had this game play option.
8. Satisfaction - The sheer amount of time and effort required to reach level 99 in a skill, for example, is a strong reason why OSRS feels so rewarding.

4 things that are a huge win in my book when it comes to Old School RuneScape. you can freely hop between worlds (never get locked away from friends and able to play with anybody all over the world whenever you want), you dont pick any classes or skills (you do them ALL on one character), free to play worlds dont allow members to whale on free players (members items can not be used on f2p worlds, though can be worn with no stats), and no MTX (gross).

The simplicity is decieving.. I have played wow at a decently high level.. clearing mythic and quite high keys and i genuinely think end game runescape is harder.
Wow is just hard because you need to rely on 4-19 other clowns depending on content.

RuneScape is the only game that I keep my yearly subscription running even when I’m not playing actively. I truly love the game even when I need a break I prefer to support the devs as I know I’ll be back sooner rather than later.

I remember as a 11 year old kid sending an envelope of dollars and quarters to Jagex for 1 month subscription and feeling so good. It was one of my most fond memories of playing this game. Jagex accepted cash for subs waaaay back in the day.

This definitely showcases that people are tired of being taken advantage of. We don't want incomplete games, we don't want to pay for things that are solutions to artifical problems the developers created. I think the future of maintaining a good player base is going to be done by creating games that are complete, have good endgame, don't focus on the monetization of the community but rather the enjoyment and experience of the games themselves. Subscription-based gaming makes sense if it feels like you are supporting a company that listens to and appreciates you. Nice vid!

I think Sween's answer to not being disappointed by a poll not passing was great.
Like he said, a lot of the stuff polled that failed got reworked and polled again into something he liked and it passed.
If you want to see an example look up the history of 'The Inferno' lol. It was god awful and the original proposition was struck down in the poll and reworked into one of the best pieces of content today, even if it is years old at this point.
I know some developers were disappointed when they polled 'Warding' as a new skill and it failed. But the community is pretty 50/50 on it and some think it wouldn't have fit, and other think it was fine.

Played Runescape since around 2003 and have a max cape and many other achievements on OSRS. Can say it's the only game I still play almost every day, no other game can compete. The enjoyable content never ends and something about the gameplay is so satisfying and relaxing. You just set any goal you want and play and try and achieve that goal. Get bored of that goal? well go and do something else in the game and come back when you want to. There is never really any burn out if you just keep changing up things you do in game, not to mention the amount of account builds you can create. there is also ironman account modes which a lot of the community really enjoy playing. The skill cap is very high in this game as well. Oh and no stupid monetization other than buying bonds but they are healthy for the game and are very expensive. And the one poll that didn't pass that took them a long time was when they were developing a new skill for the game.. this skill was called Warding but it just wasn't quite what the players wanted. He's not lying when he says content creation is huge for OSRS.. best of the best on youtube. For people looking for better graphics... i suggest getting runelite and downloading the 117 hd plugin.. or maybe even the HDOS client which are all legal. Runelite can be downloaded from OSRS website and HDOS can be downloaded at HDOS.dev

Accomplishment is a real thing that mtx ruin. I still remember back in early EQ2 I played a lizardman that did the long and arduous betrayal quest to switch factions. This even changed my class to ranger which was not an allowed class for lizardman at the time.

It finally hit me what I had actually accomplished when walking around the capital city and others players were literally flipping out because they had never even seen a lizardman in the city. I was turning heads everywhere I went and might have been the only lizardman ranger on my server.

Great video about my favorite MMO.

As for the AFK system, you can save 10's or even 100's of hours between active skilling and passive skilling depending on the methods and skill.

I played WoW for 10 years and never complained about my sub fee.

I’ve quit several times since they introduced the shop, and now haven’t logged in for over a year (even with a new expansion).

How did I go from happily shoveling out $180/year, to completely quitting WoW and giving them $0/year.

It’s because they now design the game to get me to buy things instead of designing it to be good.

What I love the most about OSRS is that since it's very grinding heavy, your accomplishments are way more satisfying. Also the quests in the game are different from the standard MMO quest style of "kill 10 boars" ou "collect 10 flowers" etc, they are more like mini point and click adventures with some really cool and funny stories.

I think one strong reason that keeps OSRS going is that it offers a wide variety of approaches to training the skills that you need, you could AFK train skills on OSRS mobile or on another monitor for low exp while you do something more engaging, train via one of the skilling activities for a little more exp and a more engaging experience, or you could get really sweaty with tick manipulation. All of these skills feed into questing and end game raid content so the majority are effectively unskippable.

RuneScape has such a solid foundation with skills to the point where no other mmorpg has felt quite as rewarding and meaningful. I’ve been waiting for another mmorpg to take what they did and run with it, but to also release on consoles.
