"I would rather not play a game than play a bad game". That really shows how far we've come in the space, or rather, how accessible gaming has become. For those of us who started on Atari and NES we would play anything. Except for the one rich kid in the neighborhood most of us played whatever we had because the shit was so expensive and we usually didn't have options. But the chance to play a fucking video game, even a kinda shitty one, was something a lot of us wouldn't pass up.

Part of the issue is (in my opinion) that MMOs were fantastic when they were pushing the edge of what was possible. Early levels were all about the wonder of exploration in a vibrant world. Later levels were about community and family when besting challenges the world offered, preferably in dungeons and such.

The wonder one gets from exploration is no longer as satisfying. And newer MMOs have early leveling as the preamble to the real game at the end of it all.

I'd say MMO does need to innovate. There are many ways this can be done and at the same time, offer something which doesn't have to compete with my time of wanting to play other stuff. I just don't have the same sort of free time to play for hours on end during the week and also sacrifice my gaming time for other stuff that's coming out.

Funny thing is a coat of paint over the existing genre could have done well. Warhammer AoR was realistically a WoW clone that did almost everything right except launch during WoW's peak with a PvP structure that needed a large playerbase. So while I get companies trying to figure out how to redefine the genre, I also think people are just hungry for something without all the baggage of WoW and FF14. That's why people who hate P2W games keep trying out these Korean MMOs

This game will never come out as an MMORPG. Ghostcrawler publicly said they weren't going to reinvent the wheel, and just focus on making a modern-day version of a traditional MMO. Then he left, and this announcement has happened, and it leads me to believe that if this game ever does show up it's going to be a third-person action combat 'live service' RPG with 'lobby towns' where you can group up and then go off to play with your party.

I don't think any game devs (or, more specifically, the suits holding the purse strings) are ballsy enough to try making a huge, sprawling MMORPG like there used to be. It's a massive financial gamble, even moreso than in the 2000s, because now devs have to live up to a much higher standard of graphical and audio/voice-acting fidelity.

Riot was well within their rights to cancel the project all-together after noticing the potential drop, as is their design philosophy, but they chose to pivot and explained why. I much prefer this then for Riot to stubbornly bring their previous vision to release with mediocre results.

They don't have a mmo model they can copy to success yet. Like LoL, Valo, Runeterra, TFT and even 2XKO etc. They need the next MMO genre to take over so they have something to imitate. Riot does lorebuilding, world building and storytelling well. But when it comes to gameplay loops and function their just good at polishing existing foundations (which they do well).

Exactly. Nowadays, I hear all the same stuff like "you will be able to explore the world, craft items, trade, fight monsters, complete quests from local NPCs, play minigames, and of course.. fight pvp in an arena!" ... ok... like any other MMO RPG.

No one would care if its just WoW or bdo with a league skin, that alone is fine cause lets face it every game that tries to "reinvent" mmos just ends up as one or the other but shittier anyways

This is so apparent. People who played league of legends would remember a few years back they had some “create an avatar” thing that was all meant to tie into the MMo eventually. All these ideas and creative features were dusted and never to be heard from again, just showing the original creative directions they were going at some point was completely cancelled and they’ve been hiding it all this time haha
