How MMO Players Killed an Unkillable Boss

One of the most infamous moments in MMO history has to be the death of the Sleeper on Rallos Zek. A boss that was never designed to be killed as it was a story event. Upon awakening, the sleeper would leave and death touch players in different zones.

But on the final server where it hadn't been awakened yet, intrepid raiders from the PvP server Rallos Zek took to Sleeper's Tomb to wake Kerafyrm...and upset SOE in the process.

“Hundreds of years of killing each other just for what?”

“Practice”

Bruh, they were kickin' that immortal dragon so badly that the game devs thought it was a server wide cheating

I was online (Cazic-Thule server) and we got server-wide play by plays from zone chats. Everyone, and I mean everyone was so pumped up for Rallos Zek. When Kerafim was despawned, it created such a massive uproar that EVERYONE flooded SOE's website. They got to redo the Keraphim kill and won. Some Wizard got the final killshot at 1% health with manabomb. It pissed everyone off because the dragons magic resists were 100%

Deleted my comment just cause it was eaiser. I looked into it a bit, as far as I can tell the devs didn't *believe* the players cheated but I am sure some cheating accusations where thrown around. They despawned the sleeper because it was attacking an unkillable NPC, which allowed the players to get free hits in. I thought part of it was because the sleeper wasn't programmed to be defeated, but it seems like I was mistaken in that it didn't have any droppable loot (afterwards the devs went around and manually gifted rare items to the participating players). Once the hotfix was finished, the timer was reset, everyone was respawned, and they could continue the fight. The players defeated the sleeper by having healers spam resurrect on fallen players and they were an army of 150-200 players, thus essentially and endless hoard. Manykudos did a pretty good video about it as well. Sorry about that lol, I was the one spreading mis info

I was a corpse dragging machine during the event. That was my only job, getting corpses to the clerics.

That's one of the best things from EQ.
I remember raiding The Hole, a labyrinth of elementals, and upon reaching the base (as it raided from the top, down), we fought the boss... and our raid wiped.
We had issues with corpse retrieval, so we out in a petition. An actual GM (Chrol) showed up, and walked in to instakill the boss.. sadly, moments later, we see the GM behind us running down from the entrance.
The GM was killed by the boss.
He had to despawn the boss.
A good day was had for all.

They make animes where players/groups find creative ways of strategy to overcome impossible odds as the season finally thrill, but in RL when players cool enough to pull off a memorable gaming history moment, the devs rob them of their 15 minutes of fame.

I remember this event. All the servers were following in chat channels and everything stopped to listen to the battle. It was incredible and we were waiting to find out what sort of incredible loot was dropped and that was a major shock as he didn’t have any. SOE thought he’d never die so they didn’t bother to put any on him.

20 years later and it continues to be discussed. Long live the legacy of everquest.

Ascending Dawn, Wudan, and Magus Imperialis Magicus!

I was there, 200+ people, constant zerg rezzing and deaths.

The only reason Kerafrym was even still asleep is because it was a pvp server, and the top 3 guilds basically banned together to say any guild that tried to wake it would have the combined might of the top 3 wipe their guild from the server. This allowed the guilds to farm Sleepers Tomb and continue to get the loot that stops dropping once the Sleeper is awakened.

It was a guild callled Darkenbane that actually ignored this eventually and attempted to wake the sleeper. It was feared they'd do it during off hours (It was during planes of power, and Sleepers Tomb wasn't that hard anymore), so the top 3 banded together to wake it themselves, and attempt this fight.

Hell of a memory!

My dad was a top EverQuest player. Like top 10. He tells me stories about these raid bosses all the time

There going to hell. Imaging some collage kid spending months playing and joined the raid and loses everything just for the devs to say “nah we don’t care about our players. If fact we actively hate you”

Yea you have to remember lvling in Everquest was a NIGHTMARE and if you died not only would you lose XP you would actually de-level. The MMO that started my gaming career

I had never heard of this game but I played Champions of Norrath and Return to Arms on the PS2, this short just gave me a whiplash of nostalgia.

Oh they didn't band together... They were stupidly pissed they woke it. It was a server agreement.

Loved the early days of Rallos Zek. Item and coin loot.. it was the Wild West. You always had to watch your back. I still have gigs of screenshots from those times.

Imagine teaming up in an almost impossible manner to take down an almost unkillable boss just for the dev to go "Nah you cheating" Mf if we wanted to cheat we wouldn't be doing this shit

Had a boss at my old job that played that game like it was his second profession. Constantly waxed poetic about it, comparing it to WoW, et al. Out of all the stories he told, this one was the one I believed the least, that he was there to kill this dragon for the first time. Until a year later he brought in a laptop and proved it. Seeing this clip today was like getting pinged by a ghost hahaha
