how I find more time to draw

We are all busy, so what can we do to find more time to do what we love? In this video I'll chat about my own experience with running a business and finding the time to make art as well as the importance of finding the RIGHT time over finding more time. Quality over quantity. Just some casual advice and what I learned!

I hope these tips help! and if you're short on time, here's the summary:
1. *Find Time Sucks* in your Day and reduce them: this can be social media usage, internet scrolling, watching fnaf lore videos, anything that maybe taking up more time than necessary! It's still good to have periods of rest and allow yourself to scroll and catch up with your fav creators, but just be mindful about your media consumption.
2. *Prioritize Sleep* This is so crucial to your mental and physical health. Skimping out on sleep can cause you to feel sluggish and unproductive, causing us to take longer to do tasks and eat up our free time for art and recreation. And it also causes us to make poor choices and not be as focused when we are drawing. Sleep is key to a healthy creative!
3. *Time Management Skills and Using a Planner* This is the best way to keep track of your tasks and schedule out your time so that you can still get important life stuff done and feed your artistic spirit.
4. *Find the right time to draw* over finding more time to draw: Find the times in the day when you're feeling the most creative and capitalize on those moments when you can! Hitting that creative time of day can lead to better art in a shorter period of time rather than scheduling a 3 hour time block when you're feeling less motivated or creative. Quality over quantity 💖
5. *Mini Art Sessions* Take advantage of the 5-10 minutes in between shifts, classes, or tasks to doodle a lil bit! This can keep your creative fire going and help you to remember ideas you're really excited about when you have more time to draw! These little sessions add up and can be a great a natural way to reaching your art goals.
6. *Building a Habit* A habit will make everything I recommended so much easier to stick to because you just instinctually do it and not even have to think about it. An art habit is powerful.
7. *Why do you want to draw more?* Make sure you are wanting to draw more for yourself, not because of any pressure or standard from other artists you see online. For this to be a sustainable part of your daily routine and to invest so much time into art, you have to enjoy it yourself (seems obvious but sometimes we get caught up in other peoples approval).
8. *Your value is not linked to your Productivity* It's okay if you don't make art regularly, or miss a session that you scheduled, and life just gets in the way. The amount of art you produce and the frequency in which you produce is not a measure of your value of as an artist or a person.
Happy Drawing!💖

Again, it warms my heart to see an artist spreading the RIGHT message! So many just spout of what they do (there is nothing wrong with this as they are usually just answering what they were asked, which was literally just that, what THEY do). You take the time to explain what you do, but also point out that it's only what YOU do, that it will not work for everyone. I also could hug you for pointing out mental health in this. I have my own struggles there and know EXACTLY how hard it can be to draw even when you desperately want to when dealing with that. I haven't finished a drawing in months as I speak due to said struggles. Lastly, it was wonderful to hear you say "Do not use me as a standard". That was the more beautiful piece of advice I've heard in a long time.

Focusing 100% on my job <<< watching this while working

A planner never really worked that well for me, but what did help was having a journal where after each day I write down what I have done art wise. Being able to look back and see that I actually got stuff done and taking the time to record that made me more confident in my skill.

Being honest I watched 4:59 around 10 pm yesterday and went to sleep instead of continuing to watch, so this was a really helpful one 😊

I was literally having a sad moment about my art productivity and omg this helped! I always find myself thinking of drawing but end up not doing it generally because my brain is pretty foggy rn. But this totally helped! Thank you <3

great advice! can personally testify that it works :D i deleted tiktok and put a timer on insta couple of years ago because it truly felt like my brain was rotting lol. it helped a lot with mental clarity overall.
about drawing everyday. it's definitely not for everyone. i personally stopped drawing everyday some time ago, but most importantly, i stopped expecting myself to draw everyday and stopped feeling guilty about being "unproductive" or about the speed of my improvement :)
also wanted to add that keeping a sketchbbok only for yourself, the one you'll never show anyone can be extremely beneficial in many ways

This is really helpful! Personally I don't have any art friends (most of my friends couldn't care less) but what I do is I find sketch with me videos, chatty or quiet, and I sketch along with them. I think they call it body doubling, but it's just nice to do and looking at their sketches sparks inspiration during the session for me. I've been branching out and doing different things because of it 😊 one day I'll have in real life art friends

This is so true, I stopped opening any social media app excepts Youtube.
Cause I need Youtube suggesting me how to draw better.
Boom, 6 hours gone, got lots of works done & undone.
And the importance of sleep called me out on another level. LOL

I have spent the last one and a half HOURS watching just shay while painting lol.
this video had perfect timing omg, (how do you always read my mind?) I start a new school year in half a month and I really plan on prioritising my studies this year, that along with picking up new hobbies like guitar will inevitebly consume time. But art is a part of me and i can't NOT do that. So hopefully this video will help me find time this year and be mindful of spending my time carefully.
Love ya Shay! You're keeping my brain clear as i draw

i agree, delete tiktok. aware of how much of a grumpy boomer i sound like but i just can't see the value in barely digesting 30-60 second videos with no end an sight. it's a perpetual time suck and the point you made about how people don't even remember half the stuff they watch is one of, if not the most important aspects to it, i think.

why woud you spend time mindlessly consuming things you won't even recall, a day later? it's stuffing your brain with literal junk. the alternative doesn't even have to be 24/7 'productivity'; allowing yourself to be bored and empty headed is okay and a good thing. replacing the endless scrolling by literally just sitting there and doing nothing is a net positive.

sorry for the tangent, this was a great video, as always. 4:57 might be my favorite piece of yours, it's so beautiful

i literally clicked on this video as if I'm not in art school and already draw like 10 hrs a day lmfao. But I love your advice!!! Tons of artists have regular jobs or go to regular school and just don't have the time that someone with an art career does.
