Dear Sewing Friends, how do You find time for sewing?

When I was first learning to sew I always watched the PBS show "Sewing with Nancy". Nancy Zieman wrote a book called "10, 20, 30 minutes to sew" that is this same idea expanded. When you only have a few minutes, you can make up the bobbins you will need for upcoming projects. Thanks for reminding me of this. I think the ladies who don't have designated sewing spaces have it the hardest to use this concept.

Just watched this video again and it is helpful as we close out this year and I reflect on how I can improve next year. Life threw a lot of curve balls at me this year, so I'm learning to give myself grace and just move forward into 2023 with a positive attitude and a better plan to build on my sewing habits so I can improve my sewing! Thank you as always, Alisa!

I don’t even make a schedule I just go into the sewing room whenever I have extra time on my hands. I could sew one side seam of a dress and leave the room and come back an hour later and saw the other side. For me it’s no big deal because it works and I get the garment done. Thank you for this video

For me, sitting down to sew even for a tiny amount of time is a win. The project will be done when it is done. When my six children (now adults) were small I made all their clothes. Sewing had to be snatched when it could and be counted as a win.

Wonderful tips! My biggest problem is that I don't have a dedicated space. My machine is stored away in a cupboard. Just thinking about getting everything out, making space to work on, getting tools, fabric, etc out of their storage space, etc, makes me not want to start at all. Because of this, I need a big chunk of time, which never seems to come around. I will need to plan my week to ensure I create that chunk of time.

I used to have to really plan out my sewing when my daughters were young. Now I don't have to. But this is an excellent idea. Then making something doesn't become overwhelming!

I go time based, it's usually half an hour a day while my husband is reading to my daughter. However, my #1 trick is to involve my daughter in as many steps as possible, and to be away from the sewing machine as much as possible. So choosing patterns, prepping, ironing and cutting fabric, pinning pieces together, pinning darts, all those things I will do with my daughter around, I even have sewed at the sewing machine in my sewing room with her playing. It's not my job to entertain my daughter, I do my life and my hobbies and I involve her as best I can. I also do hand sewing in the evening while watching YouTube. I can make it work.

I agree with the back-up plan...It is comforting to know that if something happens, I don't have to throw all the fabric away, wasting it completely.

When I was making A LOT of masks for family and friends that’s how I had to do it in order to get them all done was to break up the steps. Assemble material one day. Cut one day; sew another day and so on... your right it does work; and it can work.

Hi Alisa, I have been watching you for some time now and let me compliment you on 2 things: you are a savvy businesswoman — the way you present your content is such a cut above! I was pulled in by your free pattern videos, (see savvy!). But now these videos on sewing smart, they are brilliant. I personally don’t have the time restraints I had when I was your age, kids, career etc. I basically only did mending, Halloween costumes and Christmas pajamas. That makes me sad now that I’m back into it full on. I have been sewing since I was 5, and I’m 57. It is all the things you say it is, in fact it’s saved me in the last three years from serious stress. It is what keeps me close to my mother who taught me —. I lost her a year ago. So thanks for all you do! My second MAJOR compliment is, your command of the English language. Given I am sure it’s your second language? You speak better than 75% of English speaking Youtubers! I was raised by the grammar police (Journalist and English teacher). It’s really impressive. And you are articulate as well, you explain things in a way that is fully detailed yet concise. Not an easy thing to do. I lived in a country I was not a native and let me say I stunk at being fluent! Thanks for sharing!

This video is so helpful. Breaking up the task into smaller chucks makes a lot of sense. It also gives me a sense of accomplishment in the small amount of time available.

I also break down my sewing into "chunks". If one doesn't take very long and I have the time and energy for the next chunk, I will start it. I'm learning that the finishing (neckbands, cuffs, buttons, top stitching etc) takes much longer and requires such precision that I often have to allow more time than I think. I've learned the hard way not to do any sewing when I'm tired after a day's work. 😬

Lovely video.

I do a lot of things to get more time for sewing. I batch cook, meal plan, do once a month grocery shopping, I follow the organised mum method for cleaning etx.

I also batch cut and batch sew - when you have child that's grows like mad it's handy.

I am planning to replace around 70 % of our shop bought clothes with homemade once. Soo much comfier. And as Alice says each stich is made with love

I love these suggestions. I plan to do steps for sewing one day at a time. Tomorrow I plan to turn a black jellyroll into binding. Meanwhile I will wash and dry the new fabric I plan to use for the next project. Then the next day I will cut the squares of batting needed for a king size quilt of 10 inch finished blocks. Then i will I iron the

That's what I try and do. That way I am not disappointed if I don't get my project completed.

Oooh! Look at that beautiful background! It came out lovely and the brick adds so much depth. I would love a pop of color near the frame.
