Burton Richardson is not really correct though Bruce Lee already studied fencing and won a boxing tournament in China before he got to America. Bruce did start including more kickboxing judo and Catch wrestling after he realized what he knew was limited

Actually, Bruce Lee went from Seattle to Oakland, and then to LA, and Lee first came up with the term JKD with James Lee, a local martial artist and head of the Oakland branch.

Paul De Thouars school where Danny Inosanto trained with him was ten minutes from my house so I would go over there and watch. At the time I was training grappling with Gene Lebell and Gokor and had wrestled in high school and college and done years of Judo. Paul De Thouars told me what do you need grappling for.

Also Adam Chan from Vancouver Wing Chun on YouTube said that Bruce had great Kung Fu as Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do are designed backwards and that Siu Nim Tao and Chum Kiu had the best material for fighting.

Bruce self reported to have learned the first two forms of Wing Chun from visits in Hong Kong and learned the third form from Leung Sheung. The first 60 movements of the Wooden Dummy form out of 108 movements are there. So Bruce must have learned 55 percent of the Wing Chun system.

I wonder if Bruce studied wrestling, particularly Catch Wrestling, or 52 hand blocks, aka jailhouse boxing?

If I go to a JKD channel then people say JKD is the answer for everything. They are so close minded. You must learn to defense against grappling with a BJJ fighter. I'm glad to see more open minded JKD fighters.

I haven't watched yet so... but I always thought he invented JKD because he was looking for something that worked. Now to watch and see how far off I am.

Bruce Lee was a boxing school bey champion. He was involved with boxing at a youth age and he was also a street fighter as a youth which is "full-contact".

according to Jesse glover and This from the book: Bruce Lee, the life and legend. The five ways of attacks Bruce took from a guy name fred sato a black belt jesse glover introduced Bruce to and became friends. (page 8)

again from Jesse glover. the term jeet kune do came from a guy in settle who said they called their art 'intercepting fist'. and before he went to California, Bruce was toying with the idea. (page 12)

Jesse also mentioned that the only reason Bruce modified his style was because he was always looking for ways to catch up with his seniors back in Hong Kong. he would had kept changing stuff.

with the above story, now think for a second and add the story with Bruce fighting wong jack man and from this fight and as the story goes, is why he created jeet kune do. do we see how stories changes. can't believe everything we read.

not to mention that, by this young age bruce was already creating idas to form his own.

See this much in Taijiquan communities!! So much bias, prejudice and cynicism toward other arts that would crush them in a reality based conflict situation.

He never finished Wing Chun. He needed to fill the gaps of his training.

Doubters, I don't take the word of fanboys, I take the word of Joe Lewis, and other real fighters who trained with Bruce. There's also my own eyes.

Tell the truth the real reason why he created his way of fighting is bc he was getting beat in fighting by using his traditional methods. Bruce Lee was good. But still an actor that could get beat on any giving sunday. The industry tries to paint this unrealistic image of him. A matter of fact a lot of instructors that actually worked with bruce and told the truth abt him interviews was shut down or talked against.

This explanation by Mr. Burton Richarsonas is very inaccurate as it is lacking a lot of information, and he also have a few facts wrong....

The real question you should be researching is why did Bruce close all his schools down before he died , Eric Salinis is correct, but in actual fact he only had 2 years training with Yip man and you can tell this by the way Bruce is 1 sided, Bruce only had half of 1 side of the coin, 1/4 of 1 system basically and lets not even get into the fact Wing Chun Has 3 full systems, Fushun, Mainland and Hong Kong, each takes 10 years to perfect but 1 system is not complete without the other 2, except Fushun, Fushun is the complete system in 1, Mainland is derived and shortened as is Hong Kong from Fushun and then there is the modification to Hong Kong and that's another story :) and then there's the rubbish on you tube made up of bits but never complete and doesn't even work in real combat
