Here's WHY Jackie Chan Refused Bruce Lee’s Fighting Style..

Welcome back to Show Scope. Jackie Chan refused to use Bruce Lee’s fighting style while making kung fu movies in the 1970s. Not only did Chan feel that Lee was someone “no one could ever surpass,” but he also felt that Lee’s fighting style as a whole didn’t work for him. One example of this provided in the book is the claim that Lee had a tendency to execute high kicks, whereas Chan preferred to kick low to the ground.

Bruce Lee's untimely death at the age of just 32 has sparked many a conspiracy theory over the years, prompting Jackie Chan to speak out about the 'truth'. The martial artist-turned-actor, 68, made the revelation following speculation that Lee, who would have turned 82 in November, died from a number of possible causes including an ancient Chinese curse and poison. Jackie said in his autobiography "I am Chan" that he told executives "I don't want to be the next Bruce Lee, I want to be the first Jackie Chan." Respect.

I think we can all agree, and say we didn't need ANOTHER Bruce Lee, but Jackie literally put his body on the line in every film....and definitely earned his title as one of the greats....There will never be another Jackie Chan .... Living Legend !!!!

Jackie Chan has sooo much RESPECT for Bruce Lee, his big brother, his role model that he'd never want to "replace him" as asked by the producers. They both knew they had different personalities and different fighting and acting styles worked best for them individually. You bet Bruce Lee would have been the proudest of Jackie's decision to stick to his own style in Fighting Arts entertainment.

Bruce also said "never try and be someone else, because they are already taken"

While Lee's fighting style can be considered a style, he created it as a concept of flow and adaptability. Meaning everyone who uses Jeet Kune Do would fight differently depending on who they are, who the opponent is, and where they were fighting. He said it himself to "be like water" you have to flow and adapt.

If Jackie Chan used JKD It'd be completely different from Bruce Lees.

Nobody can replace Bruce Lee. Nobody can replace Jackie Chan. Chan embraced his unique strengths and carved his own path.

Jackie came up through Peking Opera. While Bruce's father was in the opera (Red Boat), Bruce came up through Gung-fu school and street fighting. This explains the main difference in their style. One is Wushu and the other is real life combat. Two different things. One is used for competition (forms), the other is designed for effectiveness. Lee famously called Wushu "the classical mess" because he believed much of it didn't work in real life situations. And so he used very little in his fight scenes. Jackie truly excelled at Wushu and faithfully executed the various animal forms, choreographing elaborate and impressive fight sequences. Bruce was more into improvisation and trying to make things look real and spontaneous.

Massive respect to Jackie for sticking to what he knew would help him succeed. Being the "next Bruce Lee" was a career death sentence and he knew it.

Chan received his first starring role in the 1973 film Little Tiger of Canton. As excited as he was to finally get his big break. His enthusiasm was somewhat tempered when he realised the director wanted him to emulate Lee's fighting and acting style.

“I said, 'No, I'm not Bruce Lee. No one can be Bruce Lee. Just as no one can be Jackie Chan as both are legends for a reason. Jackie had once said:

"He influenced me a lot, but I knew I could never be him." "He was the king of martial arts, and I just admired him." Recalling Lee’s demeanour on set once, Jackie revealed how Lee helped him out.

“Bruce was great, because he got me even more money by telling the stunt coordinator. That it was a dangerous stunt – but it wasn’t a dangerous stunt.

He was just trying to help me get paid more, and that made me so happy.” While there are inevitable comparisons here.

Chan had said Lee was the one who taught him to pay attention to the image that he projected. “He was under so much pressure to be a superhero, and that was not good for him.” “That’s one thing I learned from his life – do not try and be a superhero.” 🙏💕

Bruce Lee cannot be replaced. Jackie Chan, is definitely his own man as an action hero, energetic, acrobatic, fast paced, funny, and lovable. He too cannot be replaced. Both are Legends in their own right.

Jackie Chan was trained in traditional Chinese Opera since he was a kid - where the emphasis is on acrobatic stage fighting. Jackie was a phenomenal entertainer with martial arts knowledge.

Bruce Lee was a street fighter while growing up in Hong Kong, who chose Wing Chun because it was an effective style for close up fights in cramped areas in that densely populated city. Later, Lee added more effective techniques from other unarmed combat styles to replace the ineffective techniques in Wing Chun.
Lee was a phenomenal martial artist first, then an actor/entertainer

Jackie Chan wouldn’t have made a great replacement for Bruce Lee since they are both legends of their own

2:02 - Jackie Chan's talent came from his upbringing as a student of the China Drama Academy where he learned acrobatics, Wing Chun, and graceful dancing. This was instrumental for him developing his distinct style of cinematic comedy. He also admitted he grew up watching Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin which is the inspiration for the slapstick hilarity of his acrobatic stunts and using the environment.
