How to build a fence

In this video DIY expert Craig Phillips shows you how to build and install a simple picket fence using tanalised timber for the panels, arris rails and fence posts.
Craig marks out the dimensions of his fence, cuts the panels using a mitre saw and digs the hole for the post using a fencing spade. Once the posts are level the holes are filled with concrete before attaching the arris rails and panels using a air nailer.

Loved your method of both shaving the top to give a nice hex shape and the spacing and height trick, awesome !

Nice level site he's on, not a word about getting the heights of posts right on an uneven or sloping site.

Decided to have a go myself and built a picket fence and gate after watching your videos. Glad I did as turned out good thanks for giving the step by step guide…might have a go at my own planters next 😂 thank you

Presume this would also work in Australia? Just reverse everything and do it upside down?🤷🏻‍♂️🔨

Mortise the posts for the 'arris rails', also bevel the top of the post for water run only silverline at the end of the day, but getting it right doesn't cost the earth!

Arris rails, not Harris rails, Pales not Slats - 100mm x100mm is a bit overkill for a picket fence, use 75mm x 75mm, they'll be slightly cheaper too. Instead of mixing up concrete for posts buy bags of Postcrete it goes off in hours. 8~)

I love these videos so much. Craig makes it look so straight forward and gives you the confidence to give it a go. I've never had an issue with Silverline tools and for a homeowner like me who doesn't use them too often it's good to have a budget brand making tools you can rely on and are readily available.

I'd be adding an offcut of paver to keep that post of the bottom of your hole, but pre position your posts with two pegs and some bracing, plum your post then pour your concrete. Otherwise you risk of having your fence posts running out of plum. Not a negative mate, but try it...it works regardless of your fence post heights.

Well done Craig, I'm just starting to ignore that pronounced Liverpool accent. Like your work very much, it's plenty good enough for me. Thanks !

Craig, top job. Could you list out the dimensions of 3 pieces of timber please; posts, rails, slat. Many thanks

Hi Craig and the team at Silverline. Thank you for posting this. I'm about to build my first picket fence, in January - Wish me luck! I'm documenting the process on our website. I learned a few things here so have included what I learned on the site. I love that you guys don't should about your tools, but I have to say I want one of those spade - is that something that you make? I'm just going to check out the gate video too. Thanks for posting!

There are no such things as "Harris Rails". There are things called Arris Rails but they have a triangular section. What you are using are "Rails". Good tip with the block though.

seems the weak spots for rot will be between the post and picket.

Where can i get some "Harris" rails, my timber yard doesn't sell them.
