Rather than going straight into the house from the garage...I always take the scenic route and carry my groceries out, through the gate and around to the back door!

I don't have two 4x4's put together but it is a 4x6 post. Hope that holds up well.

That should stop the villagers from storming into your castle

Awesome tips! I’m currently welding up a custom gate for the back yard out of iron

We dont use wood post but we like the technique!

Hoping to build my first gate soon. Glad to see the "extra" 2x4's there because I was wondering about extra support. I don't want my gate to fail shortly after

great job, however I would think the 2nd 4x4 should be inline with the fence rather than perpendicular because the stress on the post is from the leveraged weight of the gate which is normally closed and that is the force you are trying to combat.

Almost nailed it. Gate is perfect we build those exactly like that daily. The post should be 4x8 turned with longest side to run with fence line. The latch is ok but they make mutch heavier latches

I wish you would teach fence installers in my area. My fence and my neighbor fence we're done so poorly it's ridiculous.

Cut to the Chase and just use six-by-six

Just need that one (long) compression brace, that 2nd one is just adding unnecessary weight.

So the lockable portion of the latch is on the outside? I guess if you want to be locked in your yard, it's a good idea.

I put concrete between the two posts on the bottom and a 2x8 cedar top hat across the top. That ensure no movement between the 2 posts

@whatcomhandyman1350, did you sink both posts that are attached together? Or is the second post just on the ground and lagged to the sunk post?

I use 6x6's for all gate, corner and end posts and at least 120 lbs of concrete in each. Also for that much weight i use extra large heavy duty hinges and 6" lag screws instead of the hing bolts provided because hinge failure is a common issue among gates that heavy. 4 blocks the same length ( about 12" ) in the corners of the gate to back up the lags on the doors. One more thing i also use 6" lags for the supports on the back of the door. You dont get any beafier or stronger than that and dont need all that extra wood.

How do you overbuild a gate, right here is how

Great, but how to you measure and cut the brace so it fits so perfectly in the corner? I'm a newbie.

Nope! 6x6 or 8x8 for hinge side of gate. Always
