20 years as a fencer and can’t argue with any of those golden rules, do it nice or do it twice. 👍

I put my treated fence up in 1991 and after 30+ years it still looks brand new because I stain/seal it every 5-7 years.
Right on brother!

Utility locating is most often a free service for homeowners. (Just in case someone didn't know already.)

I never thought about metal hardware for a gate. Makes perfect sense! Thank you!!

Tip #7 Have your yard surveyed before even thinking about building a fence. I built my fence inside of my property line 20 years ago and my neighbor recently sued me for adverse possession, (squatters rights) of the land not fenced on the property line. He now legally owns that strip. It was very expensive to litigate.

It's nice when having a true professional reinforce how you've been building fences (occationally). Thanks for posting!

In areas of frost...along with digging your post holes deep enough, you can also bell shape the bottom of the post hole. That will prevent the frost from pushing the post and concrete up.

My father and I built our 1st fence in Florida years ago and we're getting ready to build another. Using steel post and hardware is a brilliant idea!! Considerate done! Thank You!! God Bless

A couple of these are not necessarily mistakes, but aesthetic choices. A stair step design using pre-made panels can look quite nice, especially on a gentle slope, and in some cases a custom fence that contours the ground that goes up and down just looks like the person didn't grade properly. Transitions can look nice, but its not really a fencing mistake to not have one, as it doesn't really impact the function or longevity of the fence. The rest, completely agree.

You can build a wood gate and make it work. A brace at the proper angle, coming up from the hinge side bottom to the top opposite corner and screwing it all together. For added insurance against sagging you can add a 1/4 inch all thread rod in the other direction and raise any future sag.

Would you make a video using the hardware to make the gate? Frame, hinges, et al? Would the frame have to be custom? Was it welded?

Also, what wood was used for the fence in the video? Is it cedar, or pine? Thank you.

Our minimum depth here is 4-6 feet, because of the Frontline. This transition looks excellent!

Thanks, Joe! I've learned quite a bit by watching your videos. I am replacing an existing 6' cedar privacy fence around the perimeter of my back yard. I was pleasantly surprised to find the majority of the existing 4×4 posts are still solid. I will be replacing most of the fence rails... is 'pressure treated' wood suitable for this?
