Being able to protect yourself and your family is essential. In widespread emergencies like natural disasters, looting and vandalism is very common, and there are people out there with an "I will just take what I need" mentality. People will do crazy things when faced with desperate circumstances.

Do not be the victim. Get the personal protective equipment you are comfortable with, and train regularly. If you choose to carry or keep firearms in your home, get professional instruction and train until you are extremely comfortable. Always keep firearms and weapons properly locked in a safe and out of reach of children, but quickly accessible.

It is our responsibility to protect ourselves and our families. I hate to break it to you, but no one is coming to save you. Yes there are first responders, but in a widespread emergency, they will be very busy and might not be available. Even in the best case scenario, they are several minutes or more away and that is WAY too long if someone breaks into your house.
