When you showed the image with 200 eyes I thought “you know what, we really DON’T have to talk about scallops”

For a second I didnt notice the scallops in the frame and thought they’d accidentally put a picture of scallions instead 😂

Eyes may have evolved independantly more than 40 times, but light sensitivity itself apparently evolved only once because all light sensitive cells share the same set of genes, coding for very similar enzymes and pigments.

I just love it when Creationists point to the physiology of eyes as being strong evidence in support of Intelligent Design. First of all, they exhibit a bias towards human or mammalian or tetrapodal eyes and don't seem to feel the need to consider all of the other kinds of eyes out there in nature!

Way, way more than 40 times. Jumping spiders alone seem to have evolved different types of eyes asking different subspecies independently at least 20 times. Box jellyfish have arrived 8-10 different types of eyes despite barely having the neural tissue to use them. Ocean creatures often have highly specialised sight in the IR and UV spectrum, with some extremes covering massive spectrum. Even plant photoreceptors can be quite advanced, incorporating motion sensitivity. While it could be argued that light and heat sensitive proteins are the genesis of all eyes, the actual evolution of eye structures and their light gathering and focal mechanics vary incredibly widely, and both living creatures and the fossil record show incredible specialization from telescopic focus, to spectrum sensitivity to magnetic fields.

I cannot wrap my head around this animal being in the same phylum as the octopus

Let's talk about scalloped potatoes next 😂

When you said "If guanine sounds familiar" I expected you to say it was somehow related to guano (bat poop)

"We need to talk about Scallops."

"We do?"

I always think that the argument creationists make about intelligent design is so funny because they always point to eyes. The science behind how eyes work is pretty amazing, yet simple and the added complexities that have been observed are relatively easy to understand too. Honestly I find it interesting when organisms don't have any eyes, even basic ones because of how simple it is and what an advantage it is to have.

200 EYES?! That's so shellfish of it. It's like they're taking all of the eyes on porpoise!

Grew up scalloping and was always fascinated by their eyes. So brilliant blue.

I pictured the shellfish when you said to picture scallops

Would you consider doing a story on the tubular, internally-articulated, tri-retinal, stereoscopy-obviating primary eyes of many species of spiders?

"Which came first, the scallop or the intergalactic telescope" 😂

So you're telling me: They could build telescopes _(theoretically)_ 🤨
