The timing on this is funny! Today there were two teens that were struggling to do face pulls. They were basically just leaning back with both feet together and the weight kept pulling them back. I'm not normally a person that gives unsolicited advice at the gym but I made an exception because they were literally asking each other what was wrong with what they were doing and couldn't figure it out.

I asked if I could say something, and when they said yes, I recommended a staggered stance, putting weight on one foot and stabilizing with the other. Still with a slight lean back. Not as good as sitting backwards on the incline bench as you recommend, but still a big improvement and they were genuinely grateful.

Do face pulls on lat pull down with one foot pushing on seat..my fave! Try some static holds at top, pulsing, slow negatives and positives. Use longest rope possible. Superset with light dumbbell side raises similar fashion. Don’t forget standing rear delt flies and/or rope rear delt rows, I hate rear delt fly machine reverse pec dec idk why too restrictive. Been loving this channel lately bro! Recently subscribed

I think that the biggest issue is that the arms aren't high enough for this to be a face pull, it's just a row variation as shown in the video.

To me, face pulls should ideally end with your elbows bent at 90° with the hands overhead and slightly tilted behind you because they are meant to activate the rotator cuff and traps.

I think that it's a good idea to have something to brace against but it would be better to lie face down on a bench with some dumbbells because the most important part of that movement is pulling the shoulders back and generating that rotation at the end of the exercise.

I'd argue that the shorter range of motion wouldn't be that serious of an issue because you'll get that from a whole bunch of other exercises. It's also a bit less cumbersome to set up than calibrating the cable machine to the correct height and getting the optimal grip for your body proportions.

If you're not able to get a bench you could still get a good stimulus from lying on the ground with some plates in your hands and just doing the very last part of the movement in isolation to really focus all the intensity on that last part of the movement involving the rotator cuff and upper back.

Cables just kinda smoothen out the travel a bit keeping resistance even, you are right about the method for sure but I don't think a rowing machine allows for enough external rotation to really get that pinch.
