Kind of. First off you can shoot supersonic ammunition through the suppressor and it will still quiet the shot, but you are correct the sonic crack of the bullet will still be heard. The suppressor is actually slowing and cooling the gas itself down so that the gas doesn’t make as much noise. Most of the muzzle blast noise from a firearm is due to gas rapidly expanding at high pressure and the differential temperature of the hot gas and the outside air. For a good illustration go in a garage and charge up an air compressor. Now let the air escape the hose extremely fast, pretty loud right? Then release the air slow and controlled, not nearly as loud. That essentially what a suppressor is doing, just way hotter and faster and higher pressure haha. I'm going to be pedantic here.
You still have not explained how/why they work, just that they trap the expanding gases, but why does that reduce the sound ?

For that we have a look how the noise is generated. The noise is an effect of the explosion within the chamber, which is transported to the outside after the bullet leaves. This transportation is done via the gases pushing the outside air molucules which in return will force your eardrum to vibrate, which, well, we call sound.

So our goal here is to stop the vibration of the air molecules -which generally is done by reduceing the potential pressure the expanding gases create.

To acchieve that, there are generally there are 3 methods used today.
a) reduce the pressure exeting the muzzle or surpressor - this is generally done by createing a larger space which traps the gases releaseing them slower which will reduce the peak pressure, which in return will reduce the amount of vibration of the air molecules, cause less vibration on your ear drum.
- This is also where the idea of the "bottle on the end of a firearm"-trope in movies comes from, something what does actually work, however due to the material used only to a certain extent and only for 1 maybe 2 shots.

b) reduceing temperature within the expanding gas. As we should know from physics 101, temperature is a form of energy. Higher energy of a gas means higher potential to move air molecules. So we can reduce the energy by reduceing the temperature of the gases. This led to the invention of "wet silencers".
Where water is used to take the heat-energy of the gases reduceing again the potential to vibrate outside air molecules.

c) the last one is useing counter running pressure waves to reduce the pressure exeting the surpressor.
If you have a Sin-wave and overlway it with the Cos-Wave of the same amplitude you could potentially cancel outeach other. (this method for example is used in active noise canceling headphones, where outside noise is recorded and played back to you in a negative which will result in the effect those headphones have) This however is a mear theoretical possibility.
What can be done however is by redirecting the gases within the supressor, we can redirect a -0.3 amplitude to run towards the +1 pressurewave reduceing the spressure exeting the surpressor to a 0.7.

What we see in modern surpressors, generally is a combination of all 3 where b)'s water is substituted by solid heat-exchangers.


TL;DR: To surpress the sound the expanding gases create we can reduce it's pressure within a large can, reduce it's potential energy by takeing away the gases heat and lastly redirect pressure to run counter the innital to reduce the exeting pressure amplitude.

Friend made a Ruger 10-22 with a modified bolt that stopped the clack when it cycled. With a good suppressor, and subsonic ammo it was the quietest gun I've ever seen. Couldn't use it semi auto due to the modified "silent bolt" for some reason, can't remember the explanation 😕
