Two things: Hiram Percy Maxim, the son of Hiram Maxim invented it to not scare water fowl while out duck hunting. Then when he got annoyed at how loud cars at the time were, he modified it to create the muffler.

They are indeed silencers. That’s what Maxim called it and that’s what the patent called it.

I remember seeing a few guys at my summer camp (with permission) tape a water bottle the end of a 22 and it worked surprisingly well as a suppressor.

The earliest use of the technical term suppressor to refer to firearm noise reduction is in US Patent 4530417, July 23, 1985, "A suppressor for reducing the muzzle blast of firearms or the like".


Maxium came up with his brand of suppressor called a "silencer" in 1902 as a marketing ploy. Suppressor/Muffler is the correct term for a group of objects. Silencer is the Brand name similar to how Coca Cola is the brand name for Soda/Pop. Yet people down south call all Soda "coke".

Hiram Maxim patented it as a silencer. And several devices through the 20th century were implemented on many different machines as silencers. None of these actually made the devices they were used on actually silent. Some air tools are fitted with silencers but you can still hear them. Machine tools have silencers as well. Yet their operation is still quite audible .

There is a threshold of recoil reduction related to the length and number of baffles in every muzzle device. Once you exceed that length or baffle count, there is no decrease in recoil.

ive seen integrally suppressed rifles where the entire barrel was crosscut and milled and had a sleeve over it making the entire front end. just on long baffle system
