Once squared, spaced1/16th, grinded at 45%at a thickness of a nickel tacted for the hot past after feathering the tack and the pipe. If you have to pull out of the hot past it should leave a keyhole. Before starting the weld feather it out slightly

The biggest thing new welders or welders that are new to pipe do wrong is weld to cold on the root and hold it out of the pipe (longer arch) you want to be able to hold that rod right in against the pipe (preferably at a 90 degree angle) and walk that root right up the pipe, don't get mad if it doesn't go right, people get a key hole going and they tend to hold a arch then it gets outta hand (big keyhole. If you decide to stick to welding than do not cheap out with a shitty machine. Those Lincoln 300, 325 etc diesels are the cats meow. U
Look around you can get a good used one. Believe me when I first started out pipelining I had a Miller, I worked hard with that piece of crap and never had repairs but one day my truck was in the shop and I borrowed my buddies Lincoln and I bought a new one the next day. What a difference. My wife put a downhand root in a 12” pipe practicing and I just showed her how, Thats how much better it is than others.
