The McDonald’s apple pie isn’t just a fast-food dessert—it’s a piece of pop culture history. Since its debut in 1968, this crispy, golden treat has captured the hearts (and taste buds) of customers worldwide, evolving over the decades from its beloved fried form to the controversial baked version. But how did it become such an iconic menu item? And why is it so damn lip-scorching?

Actually I think fried Apple pies are pretty common internationally, here in NZ -they are made with local apples and fried.

Popeyes and Krystal still serve the fried versions. McD can keep that baked abomination.

Australia is another location with the burning hot fried goodness.

McDonald's claiming the change was for a healthier choice is laughable. When they also removed salads, grilled chicken, yogurt and fruit cups, and wraps from the menu😅 I'd say the pies were replaced for liability issues. People can't read too save their lives now, and common sense is null. Warnings on the box, and knowing that they came out of a fryer but proceed to bite right into a fresh fried pie 🥵 and then want to bring a lawsuit when their stupidity cause them to be burned😅 At least the Hardee's in my area still has fried pies, their whole menu puts McDs to shame anyway.

Great video one thing that was not mentioned as part of the reason McDonald's ditched the fried apple pie was they had to be cooked while they were completely frozen solid if they started to defrost at all the pies would explode in the fryer, causing a massive amount of waste. It was not uncommon for a whole rack of eight pies to explode in the fryer. The cost was just adding up, and then alternative was found.

We got fried taro and Haupia pie flavors in Hawai’i. Delish 🧡

Oh! I was so confused for the better part of this video. I was thinking, “wow, that baked McD’s pie is just like the fried one!” Then you mentioned Hawaii still fries their pie. So, yeah…never actually had their baked pies. Phew! 😂

In Thailand, McDonald's has corn pies. Edit: I see you mentioned it later in the video.

One of my favourite memories is when I got Pokemon Red for my birthday, Mom let me skip school, and took me to McDonalds for an apple pie that I ate while playing Pokemon.

I used to work at McDonald's and our management had a tendency to treat the pies as "expendable" because all other tasks took absolute priority which prevented them from being moved into the warming zone quickly enough and therefore resulting in them being wasted.

The (fried) Taro pie that is often found in Asian countries is amazing.

Bacon-Potato is seasonal to Japan and is delicious too!

I worked at a McDonald's like 20 years ago. Back then, we baked the pies. Sometimes we'd forget to take them out of the oven. Sometimes an incompetent employee would put them in and not set the timer, or just hit the timer when it rang and leave them in the oven.

Worked McDonalds in the late 70s. I liked eating the pies, but they were a pain in the butt to cook, going into a really complicated rack to be fried that they frequently stuck to and sometimes bursting in the fryer.

I worked at McDonald’s when they stopped frying them. They started baking them because they got new ovens for the McDonald’s pizza. They had introduced pizza at McDonald’s and decided to use those ovens for various items. The pizza failed but I surely believe it’s about money, not the heat.

I just miss that crunch. The filling is still delicious, but the crunch was half its character

They serve the original pie here in Portugal. It is delicious. Portugal law is much less favorable to lawsuits for things like burning yourself with a "hot apple pie" so I'm sure McDonalds feels safer serving it here.
