Why EU’s Tariffs Won’t Stop Chinese EVs

Critics say the European Union’s provisional tariffs on Chinese EVs could raise prices, reduce choice and slow the pace with which the EU meets its climate change mitigation targets. Some European automakers, especially those from Germany, oppose them. They also might not be high enough to actually stop the tide of Chinese imports. And yet supporters say these measures are necessary to offset the harm done by China’s pattern of generously subsidizing its own industries and subsequently crushing global competition.

The EU and US love free trade when they are ahead but not when the playing field is even.

CNBC make it sounds like the US and EU don't have government supporting and subsidizeing their own EV companies. Why do say it out loud, that only the US and EU are allowed to subsidize their companies.

It's called "incentives" here, and "illegal subsidies" in other countries.

If you can't compete, then blame China on "overcapacity" 🤦‍♂️

Remember when the Europeans forced the Chinese to open their markets to European goods back in the 1800s?

So hypocritical. Subsidizing VW is good, subsidizing BYD is haram. And it's funny to see these BMWs and Mercedes saying they want to sell more expensive cars to make more profit, but as soon as there are competitors, they go and complain to the government.

As a European, I have no problem to buy a Chinese car if the ration price:quality is satisfying. In my opinion the tariffs are not fair. Why don’t we increase the tariffs for Tesla too?

Always thought it’s funny that when western legacy car makers got defeated, they come up with all kinds of excuses

OVERCAPACITY ??!!
How about Japan producing Toyota, Honda etc etc cars more than what they need domestically & sell them in other countries ?? Overcapacity ??
How about South Korea with Hyundai, KIA, etc etc selling their cars overseas ?? Also overcapacity ??
They are all the same things.
This is business.

So Americans can sell their cars in China, but China can’t sell their cars in US ??

when you are dominating the markets, then you say the free market rule is good; and when you are in the inferior position, you accuse the competitor being too competitive while ignoring the facts that EU, China and US were standing on the same line years ago, pathetic
