Trump Promised More Tariffs — That Means Everything Will Get More Expensive | Forbes Topline

The United States drastically cut its reliance on tariffs as a primary form of federal revenue over a century ago. With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, a lot of things are going to change – especially the price of everyday items.

While on the campaign trail, the president-elect made a number of promises regarding tariffs on foreign-made goods. Specifically, Trump said as recently as November 4 that there would be tariffs of at least 25% – which could rise to as high as 100% – on goods made in Mexico. Previously, he said that goods made in China should be hit with a 60% tariff, while anything manufactured abroad should have a blanket 20% tariff. Presuming Trump makes good on those promises, that would mean that a slew of imported items.

Tarrifs will raise prices. As a result, companies will cut back on bonuses or eliminate them. Raises will be less or passed up. Less or no more overtime. Layoffs probably. The only people who will not be hurt by all of this are the rich business owners as they will get tax breaks still and any assistance that they will use for themselves.

Then there's more tax the consumer would have to pay on higher costs of everything on top of taxes on other things that will have to be subsidized in order to make up for the share that the rich won't have to pay because of their huge tax breaks.

And then there's inflation caused by lack of immigrant workers who provide cheap labor that do jobs Americans won't do. And they pay a lot of taxes of which would disappear, thus adding to the tax burden put upon the average person to make up for what the rich won't pay.

Immigrants doing jobs Americans won't. And paying taxes rich Americans won't.

That was my question. Hardly anything is made in America. So how are tariffs going to help do anything except make everything more expensive that isn’t made here? Tariffs have been a dividing policy in the U.S. since 1832.

No, domestic producers will not be offering lower prices. They will price match or be just a smidge less expensive than the imports. Duh, hello? Capitalism...
If this would work, then our grocery prices wouldn't be as high as they are rn. Also, we are not the only country experiencing high prices, it's happening globally.
