The certified pre-owned (CPO) car market is hitting roadblocks in 2024, as inventory shortages and demand shifts expose deep cracks in the system. Sales for CPO vehicles took a steep plunge in September—down 20.8% year-over-year and 22.4% from August alone, marking a hard reality check for dealers. With only 182,551 CPO units sold last month, many are questioning if the CPO model can even sustain itself as shortages continue to rock the automotive world.

We recently bought a new Acura MDX because of the certified vehicles just not being available. The dealers we looked at all put new vehicles into their loaner program for a few months to be able to offer certified vehicles. The only problem was they were only about $1000 difference between a new and used certified one.
