Do not protract your elbows you will shift the focus on your waist as your waist is the one that is allowing you to shift sideways, do it normally to engage your back at the same time.

The problem with this is it encourages the lifter from compensating through shoulder, hip/pelvic and core muscles rather than focusing on isolating the back muscles
